KARACHI: The newly-formed national selection committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is scheduled to meet at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.

According to a PCB media release, chief selector-cum-Pakistan team manager Moin Khan will chair the meeting which will finalise the list of players for the month-long conditioning camp, to be held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore from May 6.

Last week, the PCB unveiled a six-man selection panel which includes former bowling Pakistan coach Mohammad Akram, who is also the new head coach of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, Shoaib Mohammad, Saleem Yousuf, Wajahatullah Wasti and Ijaz Ahmed, currently the fielding coach at the NCA.

Moin, the former Pakistan captain who had served as the head coach during the Asia Cup and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh recently, is slated to address the media after the meeting winds up in the afternoon, says the PCB release.

Meanwhile, the PCB has named a four-man junior selection committee with ex-Test batsman Basit Ali — who is the cricket board-appointed consultant for Zone-I — as its chairman with former Test players Farrukh Zaman and Ali Naqvi as well as Ali Zia, who is also the current senior general manager academies at the NCA.

Farrukh is thus the only member of the previous national selection committee to become part of the new setup that PCB chairman Najam Sethi is gradually implementing since coming into power after his predecessor Zaka Ashraf was removed as the cricket board by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is also the PCB patron-in-chief.

Of the outgoing selection committee, only Azhar Khan — who served as the interim chairman after Iqbal Qasim chose not renew his contract last July, and Saleem Jaffer were not retained.

Saleem, a former Test left-arm paceman, was one of the longest serving selectors since he had almost worked in that capacity without a break after the 2007 World Cup when Salahuddin Ahmed was named the chief selector of the committee which also included Shafqat Rana.

Subsequently, Saleem later was member of the selection panels under the chairmanship of Abdul Qadir, Iqbal Qasim (twice) and Mohsin Khan.

Saleem briefly acted as the chief selector after Salahuddin resigned in early October 2008 on grounds of morality after a senior PCB official, Shafqat Naghmi, tampered with the original team selections by dropping Saeed Ajmal to accommodate Shoaib Khan, a left-handed opening batsman from Quetta for a quadrangular Twenty20 tournament in the Canadian city of King City.
