KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain Rashid Latif has refused a meeting with PCB chairman Najam Sethi who appeared keen to convince the ex-wicketkeeper to take up the chief selector’s post after he had turned down the job early this week.
A reliable source in the Board informed that Sethi had asked former captain Moin Khan to meet with Rashid and convince him to change his mind and also meet with him (Sethi) on Monday in Lahore. “But apparently Moin’s efforts to convince Rashid for a meeting with Sethi have failed because the former captain has reiterated he is no longer interested in becoming the chief selector,” the source confirmed.
“This basically means that the meeting set for Monday will no more be held and now the PCB will have to search for a new chief selector,” the source said.
If reports are to believed, even Sethi has almost given up hope on Rashid joining as chief selector now. “At a meeting held on Friday where Rashid’s issue was discussed, Sethi said it didn’t appear that Rashid was interested in the offer anymore so the matter should be closed now,” sources in PCB said.

Rashid is a man of highest integrity. It is beneath his dignity to get involved in this mess. Sethi needs to resign and proper elections need to take place. Then again, knowing PCB that's just wishful thinking.

It is easy to criticizes from outside and men of courage take responsibility. Rashid was given a chance to serve but people like him loves criticizing and gossip from outside.The fear of failing prompted this decision. Rashid has lost moral right to comment on state of Cricket in Pakistan and if he have any shame he should only concentrate on his academy and stop crying from on TV channels..

What is the point of being a chief selector if you are going to be overruled at every critical juncture by a sifarshi chairman with no integrity and no cricket knowledge. Rashid was never anyone's puppet.

Great character Rashid ! The nation needs people like you to deliver results. On related note, if Moin Khan now takes up this job, then he is someone who will be character-less and not worth respected any more. Again, on Sethi's dictations, people like Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal will get into the team (Si fa rishees) and youngester won't be given an chance.

There seem to be a lack of communication. In this modern days of email and courier services it is better to have things in writing rather then commenting on it on hearsay. It seems Rashid Latif didn't receive the invitation from Sethi to meet him on Monday 14th' April. Rashid did write a letter to Sethi asking him a few questions to clarify his role. Sethi didn't reply and said he was going to address it on his return from the ICC meeting.
Rashid Latif should meet Sethi and give his reasons for not accepting the role. What transpired in between he should say why he changed his mind. Pakistan cricket needs and honest and straight forward man like Rashid and he owes it to Pakistan cricket and the nation.

A soldier refuses to serve the nation because he does not like the General. How is this a great character as some of you have claimed? It shows personal issues have priority over national issues for Latif.

True men works under adverse conditions and take up the challenge... Ordinary men run away from situation... I fail to understand how can Rashid be man of principle as he is running away responsibility without a single day in office. I would have accepted your argument if he has resigned fighting for his principles...

If he has character he claims to have than he must accept the offer and pick the best team. If someone interferes in his work, he should quit and make things public. He will do no harm to his reputation.
But he clearly doesn't want to come down from the high pedestal and loose the divine right to point fingers at others. If you cannot change the system or people that you are never tired of criticizing, than why you expect others to change ?????

A wise and excellent decision because meeting-up with the 35-puncture episode personality by Rashid Latif would have tarnished his own reputation as being a person of great character who wants to serve merit and real talent in cricket. He must concentrate on what he is currently doing - serving the good cause of cricket by staying outside PCB, who are nothing but bunch of cronies serving their masters and doing nothing for the betterment and promotion of cricket in the "land of the pure" or anywhere else. My message to Rashid Latif at this crucial juncture in time and history is to "keep it up and hang on tough."

If good men keep running away from a little adversity---then how are things going to be done in an honest manner. When a man of so called 'higher integrity' does not accept the job---it may mean that a man of lesser integrity would be willing to fill in the spot.
In the end, the nation will lose. And the thing is---what is a little bruising to the ego. Why can't you say no to those who ask you to do illegal stuff! Let them fire you---at least you can walk with your head held high---at least you tried---now you are just another loser who could not do the job because the playing field was not to your likings. What a failure.

It is highly unfortunate that in pakistan we do not consider merits to merit in any walk of life. Personal ego is always kept before national interest resulting in group formation having yes men. Rashid refuses. Because he knew that he will never be given a free hand and therefore left the job.

Will the Pakistani nation ever stop cribbing and complain all the time or do something about our situation. The fact that he does not even want to meet the PCB chief shows a bit of arrogance and the fact that he is perhaps getting a better deal elsewhere. How can everyone on these forums vouch for his integrity when he cheated openly in a test match to claim that dropped catch against Bangladesh that led to immediate suspension from the ICC. Greats like Akram are regarded highly the world over, and just read Adam Gilchrist's book and what those guys have to say about characters like Latif. When will we grow up as a nation and learn to call a spade a spade. We forget drop catches and we want to forgive spot fixers and even defend them to extend of forging conspiracy theories..

Chief selectors job is as attractive as becoming chairman of FBR. A lot of chief selectors in PCB have been working on honorary basis and not getting any salary only because they make so much money through corrupt means that they could do without a salary. Rashid Latif is known to be a clean man and he will only accept the post if he is allowed to have some clean selectors to join him too. This is the only reason that he wanted to have Mohammad Yousef as a selector but the corrupt mafia in PCB played their role to remove Rashid by negating him choice of selectors. Now Moin Khan will be ready to take up the job even on honorary basis.

When in power everyone to various degree become dictator, Sethi is no exception. He wants all the yes men around him, incidentally Rashid Latif is no such man, so the obvious for Sethi is to side line him. Who cares about cricket glory. 3 hundred million US $ in the pipe line who would want a man of character like Rashid Latif to become a bone in the neck. Mr. Sethi keep it up.
