GUJRANWALA, June 26: Leaders of various labour organizations and factory workers criticized the industrial policy announced by the Punjab government and termed it an economic assassination of workers.
Speaking at a labour conference here on Thursday, labour leaders Mian Ataur Rehman, Sardar Muhammad Adeeb, Naseeruddin Humayun Malik and others said that labour inspectors would not be allowed to visit factories for inspection under the new industrial policy. This would provide ample opportunity to factory owners and industrials to involve themselves in the child labour and other illegal activities, they feared.
They demanded that labour inspectors should be allowed to visit the factories to combat any illegal activity with an iron hand.
They apprehended that industrialists would not provide correct assessment without inspection by labour inspectors and that they would deprive workers of their rights as well.
SHOT DEAD: An official of a sensitive department was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Kalaski bypass intersection on Thursday.
Subedar Major Ghazanfar Ali along with his dozen colleagues was going back to Cantonment when some unidentified assailants opened fire on him. He sustained serious bullet wounds and died on the way to the local CMH. DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal, DPO Saud Aziz and Wazirabad ASP Waqar Ahmad rushed to the spot with a heavy police contingent. Police took into custody around 10 suspects for interrogation. They said that the accused would be arrested soon.
KILLED: A passerby was killed while an army officer sustained injuries when an army vehicle collided with a truck on the GT Road here on Thursday.
The army officer was on the way to Cantonment when his vehicle smashed into the oncoming truck near Shaheenabad. As a result, passerby Iqbal died on the spot while the army officer received injuries.
Police are going into the matter.
ARRESTED: The Range police claimed to have arrested 2,038 drug pushers and recovered a huge quantity of narcotics from their possession during the last six months.
This was stated by DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal while speaking at an anti-narcotics seminar arranged by a youth organization here on Thursday.
He said that police seized 20 kg heroin, 262 kg hashish, 9,839 bottles of liquor from their possession.
