Zombies! More zombies! They’re everywhere! From action/horror films to gory graphic novels, to frightening video games and TV shows, it seems that our pop culture’s appetite for these undead monsters is almost as strong as a zombie’s love for succulent b-r-r-raaains.
Now, courtesy of game development team ‘One Chicken Army’, who sport a logo that is almost as cool as their name, we have an amusing new zombie title available on the Google Play store that is also reportedly coming to the iOS store.
Coming in as a small 45MB download, Zombies Ate My Doctor is an adorable looking fast-paced shooter which features colourful and visually pleasing aesthetics, highly reminiscent of the PoPCap Games classic, Plants versus Zombies. The cartoonish art direction is also similar to what you would see in an old-school LucasArts adventure game; which is fitting, considering that the title of this smartphone app seems to have been inspired by the classic LucasArts run and gun Super Nintendo title, Zombies Ate My Neighbors.
Zombies Ate My Doctor runs with the two simple staples of video games; going fast, and shooting zombies to a bloody pulp. The setting might seem familiar to fans of the graphic novel and TV show, The Walking Dead. When you wake up in this ’endless’ game, you are in a hospital stretcher, presumably the survivor of a zombie apocalypse. Your doctor frantically pushes you in your bed across the hospital with increasing speed as you evade obstacles in your path and avoid running into closed doors by tilting your device sideways. To make matters worse, zombies are littered across your path, constantly trying to score a taste. But fear not, coming to your aid are projectile weapons such as a handgun, an AK-47, a crossbow, a shotgun, and a revolver, all with varying degrees of firepower. To fire these weapons you must simply tap on the target on your screen.
Along with the game’s weapons, you can also upgrade your hospital bed. Upgraded beds in the game are powered by engines, have spikes, and even chainsaws! In order to buy these expensive upgrades, you must either buy coins, or simply collect them. Earning coins is quite difficult, in what seems like an attempt to nudge the user towards electronic transactions.
Zombies Ate My Doctor also features some fun sound effects. Unfortunately, a couple of the game’s animations aren’t on par with the stellar art direction.
The game also lacks some meat on its bones, with the repetitive setting, growing as monotonous as a zombie’s diet, and the arsenal feeling a little limited. That being said, the game offers solid action, especially when one considers the hard-to-beat free price tag. Overall, with its simple interface, Zombies Ate My Doctor is an amusing distraction that is quite easy on the brain.
