GILGIT: A family video showing two teenage girls enjoying rain in their house led to their murder in Chilas on Sunday night. Their mother was also gunned down allegedly by her stepson and his four friends.

Five masked men barged into the house of retired police officer Rehmat Nabi and started firing, killing his wife and daughters, aged 15 and 16.

According to police, the crime was motivated by a video clip circulated on mobile phones and showing the girls overjoyed by rain in the lawn of their bungalow.

The video, recorded six months ago, was circulated in the area four months later probably after a relative sent it to his friends.

Police believed that the girls’ stepbrother Khutore took it as an “assault on the honour of his family” and tried to “restore the family’s honour” by killing the girls.

Khutore escaped when police tried to get in touch with him for investigation. But, his four friends were arrested and, according to a senior police official, they have confessed to the crime. A case has been registered against the five.

This story sums up everything that's wrong with Pakistan. Will the general public and lawyers (the presumed defenders of justice) throw flowers at this killer of an innocent human being too just because he was offended by their apparent dishonorable acts? (Please publish).

The men of our society are undergoing a mental breakdown. First these men abuse women (making videos in private property comes under that), then they spread nonsense about women (hey look, I captured two girls in rain) and then the 'men with honor' of the family kill them for bringing shame (how dare you get out in rain and allowed hidden strangers to make video of you from miles away).

Family honor, what family honor. Six months back they enjoyed the rain in the lawn within the confines of their house. A video was circulated by whom and for what intents and purposes is the lynchpin of the crime. Not the innocence of the women. The escapee is the real crook with the video makers and circulators. Hang them. Salams

Chilas has become a terror land where humans don't dare to pass by. The thirst for blood of this land(Chilas) has become a never ending phenomenon. Apart from everyday killings on tribal enmities, Honor killings, we have seen many major incidents like the Tourist killings on June 23rd. Last year 100s of passenger traveling to Gilgit were taken out of the buses, identified and gunned down by the local miscreants who operate under direct supervision of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

@abc: The Almighty has NOT prohibited us from making images of humans and animals. If you are a follower of Islam then you should take time (Ramadan is coming) and read the Quran (the final world of Allah SWT). There is no verse and no indication anywhere in the book that making images is haram. The problem with Muslims is that they have invented things that are not in the book and made it a part of their lives. We make statements without validations and sense. Islam is the most logical of religions. Allah SWT has given us reasons for everything he has allowed or disallowed for us. What Allah SWT has made mandatory on all Muslims is to seek knowledge and please note that calling oneself a Talib does not constitute that you are seeking education.

Free your minds from the insanity of religion. Ask yourselves what GOOD reason do I have for believing in a god? What evidence is there for this god?

Cavemen used to hide in their caves from the lightening because they thought the big man in the sky was angry, they knew nothing of charged electrons and static electricity. Religion filled in the gap, explained what we wanted to understand but didn't.

@Dhammi and everyone who is tying this crime to Islam. You may conclude mainly due to your bias and preconceived misconceptions that this crime was committed as a religious duty despite the fact that the article suggests that it was an honor killing which is more of a cultural phenomenon. But it only illustrates one of the two possibilities: (1) You are dishonest in concluding that Islam actually teaches or even tolerates any such horrible acts. It is only your hatred and bias that urges you to make this statement. (2) You have done enough study of Islam and honestly believe that Islam actually teaches it's followers these horrible things. If it is (1), it is shameful for obvious reasons. If it is (2), your level of intellect is the same as the person who actually committed the crime because their interpretation of Islam (according to you) is the same as that of yours. The person misdirected his hate and false pride towards his innocent family and you are doing the same towards a religion that has nothing to do with this crime.

Rather than participate in a religion that is extremely similar to the religion causing the problem, you should do something about it. And wtf are is your god doing if they gave rain to those women, knowing that they would get killed over it? This disproves his omni-benevolence. Or it disproves his omniscience. This is one of the reasons that (I assume you are christian, however judaism and islam apply equally) your religion is helping this problem. Rather than do things you sit back and are thankful that it isn't you! Because you posted two points considering your god, I suggest to you that next time you feel like you should pray for someone, donate your time or resources to helping them. Rather than praying for them, which has no scientific proof of working, do something about it. I don't care if you go to your church and ask your fellow sheep to help and give money to NGOs that help promote women's rights in Pakistan. Seriously, if you feel that your time is better used thinking to an invisible sky wizard that you are happy that it isn't you there, I would reevaluate what kind of morals your religion gives you.

No god will stop this, because no god can. If any exists, they leave it up to us to sort out our problems. We need to wake up. WE are the inhabitants of this planet. Feel free to worship, but do not let that become the center of your life. The affairs of god are irrelevant to us. What arrogance to say that we have books purporting to be his writings, and not merely bigoted and ignorant stories from men of power, trying to impose their own twisted will on society. Our affairs are irrelevant to god, he merely watches. If he created this entire universe, do you really think it was to micromanage one of his creations, among centillions? Do you merely accept what you read in a book, or hear from a holy man? Or do you truly consider what god is, have you really thought about the man? Have you considered that referring to God as a he or she, makes no sense?

If you want people to stop being abused and killed. Stop killing people, stop creating reasons for people to die. Stop imposing superstition and concepts of honor on people. If you want true justice, do not cut off the hands of a thief, help the man. He is not a thief by choice. You cannot respond to negativity with more of the same, all you produce is a darker world. How can a belief in systems such as sharia continue, where does brutality get us? If we help each other, the man does not need to steal. If we respect each other, we can heal so many of the ailments afflicting our society.

For anybody to say that Love is not the best way forward for humanity, you are lost. We can go in any direction we want. Nothing is true, and everything is permitted. We can destroy this world tomorrow, or we can live in peace til this universe ends. The choice falls to us, we are the masters of our own destinies, no deity is. If we love, and respect each other, regardless of orientation towards anything, then we win the game. If we do this, if there is a god watching us, he will be smiling. Smiling because we figured it out.

And seriously, Middle eastern men, if you cannot help raping women when they show their heads, faces or skin in general. Then it has nothing to do with women or girls. That doesn't mean they have to live in a bag. That means you have problems in your male dominated society. It means you need to keep your dick in your pants. It means you are a terrible person. It means men need to change. See each other as people, woman or man comes after.

Unless you live in a hole somewhere, chances are you live in a society that also houses people with murderous potential. None of this sentiment will change aslong as the guilty aren't being prosecuted. The punishment must fit the crime as women are equal members of the human race and honor killings should be held accountable as illegal brutal murders punishable by death just as any other murder no exceptions.

We need to confess that there are some people who have barabaric mentality, who lives in Chilas. Just one year ago, the mob of Chilasees stopped the passenger buses going to Gilgit and under very eyes of police, identifies shia passengers and killedthem brutally by hitting the passengers with rock. Regretably no one came to rescue of shia passengers and no action was taken against the culprits till now. Then we see the group of terrorists who trekked from Chilas and killed innocent foreign tourists, who were our honored guests and hence brought a bad name for Pakistan in whole world. Such an activity could not take place without the support of local elements. Now we are seeing another horrible incident. It is the need of hour to launch a cleanup operation in Chilas, so that extremist and takfeeri elements including mullahs could be flushed out.

@naheem: Commenting on the atrocities in Pakistan does not belittle what is going on elsewhere in the world such as India. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Religion has been a huge factor in the needless deaths in society, and this story is no exception to that mindset.

I really fail to see how two innocent girls playing in the rain bring dishonour to a family, to the point that they must be killed. Seems rather detrimental to enabling a society to flourish, by continuing to kill off its own members for such petty actions. Are there no forward and open minded members of Pakistan left to speak out on this topic?

Sadly, I believe there are very few left who have the courage to see how self-destructive the Pakistan religion-based ruling hierarchy has become.

Its not the first time such a gory incident has happened in Chilas. Earlier, four girls were murdered for watching their male relatives do traditional dance. Other horrific incidents include killing of shias in Babuser and Chilas, rape of a Norwegian trekker and the recent killing of 9 mountaineers. It is not even an cultural issue. People of Chilas and Kohistan follow the same sect of Islam as that of Taliban and LeJ. This sect has issued fatwas justifying such acts. You just need to google it.

Allah is Mighty, Wise 2:892 And call two witness from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not at hand, then a man and two women, 4:176 unto the male is the equivalent of the share of two females.

Women as property: 4:20 And if ye wish to exchange one wife for another and ye have given unto one of them a sum of money (however great), take nothing from it. Would ye take it by the way of calumny and open wrong ? 11:78 - He said: O my people! Here are my daughters! They are purer for you. Beware of Allah, and degrade me not in (the person of) my guests. Is there not among you any upright man ?

Men are in charge of a woman and should be submissive or should be beaten to submission: 4:34 Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

Women have no say: 4:24 And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess.

I can go on, really!

By the end of June 2011, Muslim prisoners are 10672 and Hindu prisoners are 452. But in general population Hindus and Muslims are approximately same.

June 26, 2013 11:24 pm

@Chris Simmons: Religion might be a huge factor but the bigger factor is Education! The religious mullahs can only influence the thinking of uneducated poor individuals (which unfortunately my country has in millions) and twist religion to ignite violence and intolerance against anything secular. On the other hand a huge population of Pakistan consists of intellectuals, highly learned individuals, scholars and scientists and experts in every field. They also practice Islam but at the same time are secular and tolerant and are productive members of the society. An educated Mulsim won't do something like this, an unedcuated muslim would. So it's not religion - it's education. Tribal culture of honor killing etc is not religion based, it's been passed on by their fore fathers - which you guessed it right were unfortunately illiterate. This could apply to Pakistan, India or anywhere where we have millions of poor people who are uneducated.

If this man was so ashamed of what his stepsisters did - maybe he should have taken his own life - that way he wouldn't have had to face this humility. I strongly believe he should face the most severe punishment, so that it could teach others a lesson not to even let this thought cross their mind. I cannot ever imagine any religion condoning such acts - it is the interpretation of the religion (unfortunately it is not restricted to Islam only - Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc.), that encourages these extreme views. While these uneducated population of our society will continue to practice such extreme views, I believe our justice system - which i hope is run by well-educated, smart individuals, whosel common sense allows them to distinguish right from wrong, will apply the full force of the law and teach these criminals a lesson, where no one in the future will dare consider taking such measures.

@RobotStick: What would you do if u catch your wife with another man in compromised position. You would directly divorce her or worse. You would definitely not talk to her and try to convince her otherwise. But a Muslim man is ordered to talk to his wife and try to convince her, even then if she doesn't stop then he is ordered to stop having any physical contact with her as a punishment. Even after that if she commits adultery again and he still wants to keep her as a wife then he is allowed to beat her (that too with the thinnest stick and with the weakest force) and then if she stops committing adultery then forget about this all episode and do not taunt or tease her in future. Many of my friends have wasted zero time here to link this sad development to Religious Extremism. My request here is to please consider some points before defaming or false claiming anything. Firstly, the region mentioned here has a historic background which needs to be kept in mind before going forward. It was an important city on the Silk road along which, Buddhism was spread from South Asia to the rest of Asia. Then there were Tarkhan Dynasty, British Era, Tajiks of Xinjiang etc. So its a mix culture that has always captivated this land. But all along since that time, the environment in Gilgit has kept its own and there daily routine and life is pretty much the same as it used to be hundreds of years ago. You can call it Lack of Education or limited Religion Understanding or whatever but the truth is, in these historic places, Honor is always that comes first no matter what. I am in no way defending such irrational and horrendous activities but i am just putting their point of you which has over the years not changed a bit no matter what. Yes it is cruel and certainly not acceptable but this do exist there and we can not turn a blind eye to it. This incident has nothing to do with religion just like Rape cases in india has nothing to do with Hinduism and the horrendous School and Theatre Killings in US with Christianity. Please spread a better understanding of one another. We do not have another life to live. So live in peace and let others live too...!!!

So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. I don´t see any direct relationship with Islam in this case. The murder of poor girls and their mother have most probably to do with (wrong) traditions arising from feudal mentality. In last two years a couple of "Honour Killings" occured also here in Italy - unfortunately in families of Pakistani origin. It is evident that these cases are referred to Islam. In the same way, most of Pkistanis relate any negativ news in the so-called "West" with Christianity which is rediculous, as the role of religion in most of West European countries is very limited. It is not a question of hypocracy in East or West.
