Two shot dead for honour

MANSEHRA, Nov 10: A man allegedly killed his daughter and another man in an honour-related incident in Danna area in the limits of Pulrah police station on Saturday.

According to police, the man first killed his daughter at home and later shot dead his relative and then fled. Police said the accused suspected that his daughter had illicit relations with the man.

Pulrah police after lodging FIR started investigation to apprehend the culprit.—Correspondent  

USC outlet in Khar closed

KHAR, Nov 10: The only outlet of Utility Stores Corporation in Bajaur Agency has been closed due to non-availability of essential items for last several weeks.

Sources told Dawn on Saturday the USC outlet in Khar had been closed because of non-availability of food items.

The USC officials in Khar confirmed the outlet had been closed due to shortage of food and other items.

Khadam Barq, in-charge of the outlet, told this correspondent most food items, including sugar, flour, edible oil, ghee and pulses, had finished in the store for last several weeks. He said the supply to the store was suspended before Eidul Azha.

“We are also concerned about the non-availability of food items in the store and have placed order for fresh supply to the regional office but no step has been taken in this regard,” he added.

Meanwhile, the tribal elders demanded of the administration to take immediate steps for restoration of supply to the store.—Correspondent

Girl killed in ‘accidental firing’

KOHAT, Nov 10: A man killed his younger sister after his pistol allegedly went off while cleaning it in Jungle Khel area on Saturday.

Rab Nawaz, father of the victim, told Jungle Khel police he was sitting in the drawing room with his friends when he heard gunshot from inside his home. He said when he went inside he found his daughter lying in a pool of blood in her room.

Meanwhile, Mr Israr, brother of the victim, confirmed his bail before arrest from the court.

The Jungle Khel police registered case and launched investigations to confirm whether it was an accident or intentional murder in the name of honour.

In another case in Shakardarra town, a man was killed by his rivals over a land dispute on Saturday. The victim Mohammad Yousaf told police before succumbing to injuries at hospital that Sher Zaman and his brother Sher Dil opened indiscriminate fire at him.—Correspondent  

Community policing

PESHAWAR, Nov 10: The home department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has nominated Additional Inspector General of Police (operations and training) Mohammad Masood Khan Afridi for conducting a training course on community policing strategies.

The training course will be conducted from December 3 to 7 under the Japan-Singapore partnership programme.

A statement issued here on Saturday said that the home department was making all out efforts to equip police officers to enable them to cope with the emerging challenges successfully.—Bureau Report

Security plan chalked out

PESHAWAR, Nov 10: Police have asked the business community to keep shut all the hotels, restaurants in city areas after 5th of Muharram to check movement of suspected elements.

During a meeting with the traders at Khan Raziq police station on Saturday, DSP city Imtiaz Khan asked owners of CD shops, cinemas to keep their business closed during these days.

He said use of loudspeaker (except for azan), tinted glasses and display of weapons had already been banned for a month and strict action would be taken against the violators.

Besides, he said movement of Afghan refugees would also be restricted in the city areas during Muharram and residents of the sensitive localities would also extend cooperation to law enforcement agencies.

The DSP asked the participants to keep an eye on the movement of suspected people and black shopping bags in their surroundings so that timely action could be taken in case of any possible sabotage attempt.—Bureau Report

Protecting bridge from attacks

PESHAWAR, Nov 10: The home and tribal affairs department has asked the National Highway Authority to construct security checkpoints and observation posts on Khushal Garh Bridge to protect it from attacks.

The home department in a statement on Saturday said the provincial government had given heed to the security plan chalked out by the deputy inspector general of police Kohat region for protection of the new Khushal Garh Bridge.

The security measures include construction of security check points on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa side. It asked the NHA to include the aforementioned proposals in the project activities for better security of the bridge.—Bureau Report

Writers’ groups merged

PESHAWAR, Nov 10: Both the groups of Abaseen Column Writers merged and decided to hold elections on December 25.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting held here the other day with Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi in the chair which was largely attended by members of both the groups. The participants decided to merge the organisations so that the writers could work together for development of literature.

Ziaul Haq Sarhadi was nominated as convener and Abid Akhtar Hassan as secretary of the Abaseen Column Writers for the interim period. A three-member committee comprising Abdullah Sani advocate, Fazal Shah Mohmand advocate and Talha Saeed advocate was assigned duty to prepare constitution for the organisation to hold elections on time.—Bureau Report

Pesco recovery drive continues

PESHAWAR, Nov 10: Pesco teams continued recovery of arrears from defaulters and disconnected illegal power supply.

In Pabbi-I, teams recovered Rs112,000, while supply was disconnected to five consumers for non-payment of Rs45,000. In Risal Pur, Rs141,953 were recovered from 17 defaulters, while supply to 13 consumers was disconnected for non-payment of Rs120,960.In Tank, Rs111,000 were recovered from defaulters; In Pabbi-III, Rs62,000 were recovered, and Rs194,080 were recovered from defaulters in Tangi.

In Nowshera city, Rs71,800 were recovered from 25 defaulters, while supply was disconnected to some areas for non-payment of Rs32,4089.

The teams also recovered Rs190,254 while supply was disconnected to seven consumers for non-payment of dues in Mardan.

Likewise, in Hangu, the teams recovered Rs158,532 from defaulters while supply was disconnected to 10 consumers for non-payment of Rs10,7601. In Swat, Rs96,334 were recovered from defaulters. Rs175,681 were recovered in Dargai and Rs89,428 in Hangu. Supply was also disconnected to three consumers in Hangu.—Bureau Report
