Three children shot dead

KOHAT, Sept 22: Three minor children of a family were killed in cold blood in mohallah Rangarh by two brothers on Saturday.

Mohammad Javed, the uncle of the murdered children, informed the cantonment police he was going to bazaar along with nephews Aksa Bibi (4), Mohammad (4) and Ahmed (3) when two brothers Asif and Shakir sitting in an ambush opened fire at them. As a result three children were seriously injured and were rushed to the hospital where they succumbed to injuries. The accused managed to escape.

Later, the victim’s family set the house of the accused on fire partially damaging it.

The Cantt police registered the case on the complaint of the uncle of the victims and launched investigations.

Moving scenes were witnessed when bodies of the children were taken to the grave for burial.—Correspondent

Two brothers die on road

KARAK, Sept 22: Two Afghan brothers were killed and three others seriously injured in separate road accidents here on Saturday.

Police said two Afghan brothers, Asadullah and Habibullah, who were going to Karak city on a motorcycle, collided with a pickup near Karak Township and were seriously injured. They were shifted to district headquarters hospital Karak where doctors pronounced them dead.

After autopsy, the bodies were handed over to relatives who were later moved to Afghanistan for burial. The driver of the pickup escaped along with the vehicle. The Karak police station registered the case. In another accident, three motorcyclists were injured when their bikes collided head-on in Ahmadabad. The injured identified as Hamraz, Gulzar and Khan Zaman were shifted to district headquarters hospital.

The doctors stated their condition as precarious and referred Gulzar to Peshawar.—Correspondent

Carpeting of road demanded

LAKKI MARWAT, Sept 22: Residents of Ghati Michenkhel have demanded of the government to provide funds for the construction of a blacktopped road to the village from the main Manjiwala road in Lakki Marwat.

Talking to journalists here on Saturday, Zarwali Khan, Salim Khan and others said the village was situated at a distance of two kilometers from the main Manjiwala road. They said the narrow and kacha road caused nuisance and troubles for villagers during rainy season.

“Torrential rains turn the kacha road into a pool of water forcing the villagers to stay at home besides disconnecting the village from other parts of district and elsewhere,” they said. They said the lawmakers could not fulfill the promise of building blacktopped road to the village despite lapse of over four years. They requested MPA Munawar Khan Marwat to use his influence for sanctioning funds for the road project. —Correspondent

Call for varsity in Chitral

CHITRAL, Sept 22: The vice-chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University, Sheringal, Upper Dir, Prof Jahandar Shah has proposed that the Terichmir campus of the university in Chitral should be upgraded to a full fledged university. He said Chitral deserved a university to its rich bio-diversity, cultural, ethnic and linguistic heritage, the most primitive Kalash culture and its proximity to the Central Asian States.

He was addressing the concluding ceremony of a month long workshop on ‘English language teaching; an integrated approach of applied linguistics’ in Chitral campus of the university under the aegis of HEC on Saturday.

He said M.Phil programme in English and bio-sciences was also being introduced in the campus this year.

HEC DG (services) Farmanullah Anjum said keeping young scholars and teachers abreast with the latest knowledge was the prime objective of HEC. Renowned educationist GD Langlands also spoke on the occasion and described the workshop as highly helpful for the teachers. —Correspondent

JI to observe black day

PESHAWAR, Sept 22: Jamaat-i-Islami will observe ‘black day’ today (Sunday) against the killing of people during protest demonstrations in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially in Peshawar on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Saturday the JI central naib amir Siraj ul Haq condemned the killing of six people and injuries to dozens of others and described it a ‘failure’ of the provincial government. He demanded judicial inquiry into the killing of protesters.

Flanked by JI provincial secretary information Israrullah Khan advocate, he said his party was well organised which had taken out massive processions after the Friday prayers while the violent incidents had happened before the prayers. Mr Haq said on Sunday his party would take out protest processions after 1pm from Masjid Mahabat Khan and march through various roads to condemn the killing of people. —Bureau Report  

Mercy in murder case sought

TIMERGARA, Sept 22: The family of a Pakistani national, who was arrested on murder charges in Abu Dhabi two years ago, has appealed to the foreign office and human rights organisations to take up the case with the UAE authorities for his release.

Talking to journalists here on Saturday, Inamullah, father of the detained Sanaullah, and other relatives said though Sanaullah was facing murder charges in Abu Dhabi for the last two years he had not been convicted so far.

They appealed to the government, the foreign office, the Pakistani embassy in UAE and the human rights organisations to take up Sanaullah’s case on humanitarian grounds as charges could not be proved against him.—Correspondent  

BoK assets

ABBOTTABAD, Sept 22: The Bank of Khyber (BoK) MD Bilal Mustafa has said the bank’s assets reached Rs73 billion by August 2012.

This he said while speaking at the inaugural session of the biannual conference of BoK’s conventional branches at Nathiagali here on Saturday. The conference was attended by BoK executive director Javed Hashmat, group head credits Imran Samad, Raast Islamic Banking head Kamran Masood Khan, chief managers and managers from across the country. Bilal Mustafa appreciated the efforts of the bank branches in achieving the operational targets and advised the field staff to work more dedicatedly to continue achieving more targets. —Correspondent
