Couple killed for honour

MARDAN, Sept 17: A man shot his brother and his wife dead in the name of honour on the night between Sunday and Monday in the Chakaro Pul area, police said.

The officials of Hoti police station quoted father of the slain woman as saying someone informed him that his daughter and son-in-law were lying dead in their house.

He accused his son-in-law’s father, mother and brother of killing his (the complainant’s) daughter.

He rejected the allegations of suspicious character of his daughter leveled by the accused. He said his daughter had married six years ago and both were leading a happy life in a separate house.

The Hoti police lodged FIR against the three accused and started efforts to arrest them.—Correspondent

Health services in Swat

PESHAWAR, Sept 17: The Pakistan Red Crescent Society with the support of the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is extending health services to the violence-wracked Swat district.

This was stated by chairman PRCS Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Sher Mohammad Khan at a ceremony marking inauguration of three-day workshop titled “Detailed Implementation Plan,” on Sunday.

The workshop seeks to plan activities aiming to ensure sustainability of operations after CRC left Swat and Battagram district branches of the PRCS on Monday.

Dr Sher said CRC had always extended help to the affected and vulnerable people of Pakistan particularly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said the areas lying in the west of Indus River were vulnerable to disasters, either man-made or natural, adding the inhabitants from the region were at the receiving end.—Bureau Report

Power supply cut off

KOHAT, Sept 17: The Pesco on Monday cut off power supply to a village on non-payment of outstanding dues.

The SDO, Lachi circle, Hashmat Khan Leghari, said there were Rs1.36 million outstanding against the residents of Cheshanna village.

They had been reminded several times to clear the dues but to no avail. So, electricity supply to the area was cut off, he added.—Correspondent

Politicians assailed

KOHAT, Sept 17: A jirga has asked the people to reject incompetent leadership in elections who failed to utilise huge royalty earned through natural resources on development of the region.

Held in the hujra of the patron-in-chief of Kohat Movement and former provincial minister Iftikhar ud Din Khattak at Lachi, the jirga regretted that since the discovery of huge reserves of oil and gas in the area at least one oil refinery could have been easily constructed generating employment to 60,000 unemployed youth.

The meeting was also attended among others by the patron-in-chief of Karak National Movement Malik Omer Jan and vice-president of Khattak Ittehad Malik Farooq.

They said certain foreign companies and elected representatives were controlling the natural reserves who did not want to develop the area for vested interests.—Correspondent

CSP elects office-bearers

PESHAWAR, Sept 17: Dr Hammad Uwais Agha, a senior officer, has been elected unopposed as the president of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter of Civil Services of Pakistan (CSP).

The elections to the cabinet of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter of the CSP/PAS association were held here the other day, where a large number of officers from Pakistan Administrative Service, including the under-training officers, participated.

As per the results, Dr Hammad Uwais Agha was elected as president, Dr Shehzad Khan Bangash vice-president, Zubair Asghar Qureshi general secretary and Shahidulla Khan as treasurer.

The executive committee consists of Fakhr-i-Alam Irfan, Khushal Khan, Amjad Ali Khan, Ammara Ammar Khattak, Mohammad Qaisar Khan and Shahrukh.—Bureau Report

Minister visits released driver

PESHAWAR, Sept 17: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Mian Iftikhar Hussain on Monday visited the residence of Mohibullah, driver of the kidnapped vice-chancellor of Islamia College University Peshawar, who was released the other day from the captivity of the kidnappers.

Acting vice-chancellor of Islamia College University Prof Noor Jehan and president of Peshawar University Teachers Association Jamil Ahmad also accompanied the minister on this occasion.

The minister remained with him for some time and enquired after his health. He while expressing happiness over the release of Mohibullah, also prayed for early recovery of the kidnapped vice-chancellor Ajmal Khan.—Bureau Report

PPP workers warn of protest

PESHAWAR, Sept 17: The disgruntled workers of PPP on Monday criticised the party’s provincial office-bearers and ministers and warned to start hunger strike if their demands were not accepted.

These views were expressed by speakers at a meeting held with Shaukat Khan Mohmand in the chair.

On the occasion, the participants formed ‘Workers Itehad’ at Peshawar level and also announced office-bearers.

The speakers bitterly criticised the party ministers and leaders for failing to serve poor workers. They added ministers had focused only on their own gains and had nothing to do with workers’ problems.

They said during its tenure in government the PPP leadership never paid attention to requests of the local units. They demanded of the party co-chairperson to reorganise the party and address grievances of the workers.—Bureau Report

DPC long march on Oct 1

PESHAWAR, Sept 17: Defa-i-Pakistan Council will hold long march from Peshawar to Jamrud (Khyber Agency) on October 1 against US drone attacks and imminent military operation in North Waziristan Agency.

It was decided at a meeting held here on Monday. The meeting was attended by provincial heads of the council.

A press release said a tribal jirga would be organised in Bannu on September 25 to discuss the prevailing situation.

The council would start rally from Sardar Garhi in Peshawar and would proceed to Jamrud. Central and provincial leaders of the council would lead the rally.

The meeting also discussed situation in the aftermath of the anti-Islam movie produced in America.Meanwhile, Shabab-i-Milli would organise a protest demonstration in front of the US Consulate in Peshawar today (Tuesday).—Bureau Report
