Medical & dental college

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has approved establishment of the first Federal Medical & Dental College in public sector in the capital and entrusted to the Cabinet Division its establishment and operationalisaton.

The college was inspected by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council on 28 March, 2011 and was recognised for MBBS by it. The college is affiliated with Quaid-i-Azam University which is ranked as the number one university of country by Higher Education Commission (HEC).

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) will be the main attached hospital. In addition, another hospital at NIH is coming up very soon as part of Prime Minister’s Health Complex to cater for the educational requirements of the students.

National Testing Service (NTS) will be responsible for the whole process of admission while ensuring total transparency and merit as per the laid down quota. Application forms and online deposit slips are available on NTS website. The candidates are required to send their applications on the prescribed application form along with an online deposit slip (in original) at NTS headquarters Islamabad.

The last date for the submission of the application is 17th December and the roll number slips will be dispatched on 19th December.

The admission test will be held on 1st of January 2012 and NTS will upload the result on its website. The institute will cater for educational need of students from all over Pakistan and seats have been reserved for all the provinces as per the government approved quota. This is in line with the government policy of providing affordable quality education in all professional fields. — APP

Husband kills wife

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: A husband shot his wife dead over a domestic issue in the limits of Shahzad Town police station on Sunday.

The sources said that Waqar Ahmed exchanged heated arguments with his wife, Khalida Waqar, while they were having breakfast. Later, Waqar Ahmed pulled out his pistol and shot at his wife. Resultantly, she died on the spot.

The police shifted the body to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for autopsy. Waqar’s son Sultan Waqar while recording his statement said that almost every day both his mother and father had exchange of hot words over small issues.

Duty Officer Shahzad Town police station said that Waqar Ahmed had been taken into custody after registering a case. —A Reporter

Man found shot dead

RAWALPINDI, Dec 4: The body of a young man was found in a graveyard close to Race Course police post in Westridge on Sunday.

According to the preliminary police report, the deceased, who seemed to be in his 20s, was shot in the head. He was wearing dark brown trousers with printed shirt and black shoes. Police said nothing was found on the body which could help them trace his relatives. The victim was killed during the last 12 hours.

Some passers-by spotted the body and informed the police who shifted it to the District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem.

Police said they had received no complaint regarding missing of the young man nor anybody had so far come to claim the body.

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old boy was killed after being run over by a passenger bus outside Pirwadhai bus stand on Sunday.

Police said Mohammad Awais was crossing the road when the incident occurred. The driver escaped from the scene; however, his vehicle was impounded by the police.— Staff Reporter

One dies on road

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: A 65-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a car near Zia Mosque on Sunday.

According to police sources, Manzoor Hussain was crossing Islamabad Expressway when a car driven by Abdul Sattar hit him and he died at the spot. Koral Police arrested the driver and shifted the dead body to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). — A Reporter

Body found

TAXILA, Dec 4:  Body of a man was found from a drain in Asifabad in the limits of Wah Saddar police station on Sunday.

Police said that some passersby spotted a body floating in the drain and informed the local police. On getting information, a police party reached there and shifted it to Tehsil headquarters hospital (THQ) for autopsy. Police sources said that the body had head injury. Police have registered a case and started investigation.— Correspondent

PhD scholarships

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced PhD scholarships funded jointly by HEC and Cambridge Commonwealth Trust (CCT) for the University of Cambridge UK.

Five candidates were sent to UK in the current year and another 5 will be sent there next year.Official of HEC Wasim Khaliqdad told Dawn that scholarships will be awarded for academic session fall 2012. All candidates have been advised to submit their applications by March 30, 2012 through registered mail or courier service.

He further said that age limit for the said scholarship was 40 years for full time regular faculty members of public sector universities and colleges and employees of the public sector R&D organizations, whereas 35 years for all others.

“Applicants should have minimum 50% marks in the academic career as per HEC Academic Evaluation Formula (HEC-AEF).

The HEC-AEF is available at HEC website” he added.

Those who were already availing any other scholarship of HEC were not eligible to apply, he said. — A Reporter

Crackdown

TAXILA, Dec 4: In a crackdown against outlaws, Taxila police on Sunday arrested 14 outlaws and recovered drugs and illegal weapons from them.

Talking to newsmen here sub-divisional police officer DSP Raja Taifoor Akhter gave details of the crackdown and said that separate cases were registered against the accused. — Correspondent
