Girl shot dead for honour

NOWSHERA, Sept 13: A teenaged girl was killed and a young boy was injured by the girl’s relatives in an honor-related incident at Pabbi on Monday night.

Villagers said the girl was shot dead by her relatives after they allegedly caught her with the boy in her home late at night.

Sources said the girl’s relatives locked both in a room and informed the family of the boy about the matter. They added father of the boy showed his willingness in a jirga convened at the time to accept the girl as his daughter-in-law, but the girl’s family demanded a woman to be given in Swara to the girl’s family as she was already engaged to another boy of the village.

However, the girl’s relatives decided to shoot both of them. Meanwhile, a taxi driver, Zahid Shah, was killed by car lifters in Jalozi area on Tuesday. The accused were arrested. —Correspondent

Dengue fever claims life

ABBOTTABAD, Sept 13: Health authorities said here on Tuesday of the eight persons admitted to the Ayub Medical Complex Hospital by Monday with symptoms of dengue fever one person had died.

According to a press release, special wards have been specified at the hospital for the dengue patients. Dr Junaid Sarwar has been tasked to oversee the wards.

Hospital sources said the dengue patients were brought from from different parts of Hazara division, including Gilgit, adding, one person had been discharged after treatment. They said the victim of the fever was identified as Khursheed. —Correspondent

Man killed on road

MANSEHRA, Sept 13: A man was killed when a jeep plunged into Indus River in Jalkot area of Kohistan on Tuesday.

The driver Mohammad Naseem while negotiating a sharp turn at the Jalkot road lost control over the steering as a result the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the river. Local people fished out the body and handed it over to the family.

Meanwhile, the police arrested a man and recovered 500 gram heroin from his possession on Tuesday.

A contingent of police on a tip-off intercepted a passenger vehicle at the Datta barrier and recovered 500 gram heroin concealed in shoes and arrested the alleged smuggler Daryafat Khan.

Police said the heroin was being smuggled from Peshawar to Mansehra. —Correspondent

Transporters fined

PESHAWAR, Sept 13: Taking notice of the unilateral increase in fare of public transport the officials of Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on Tuesday launched a campaign and fined operatives of 18 Ford Wagons in Peshawar.

An official of the RTA told Dawn following the instructions of the provincial Transport Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain a raiding party led by RTA secretary Naseem Bacha started checking the public transport vehicles.

He said some 120 vehicles had been checked on the first day and 18 of them fined. Each of the vehicles had been fined Rs600 as they had not displayed the fare list.

“We have strictly directed the drivers to display the fare list, and charge the actual fare otherwise strict action will be taken against them,” the official said and added the campaign would continue till next Saturday. —Bureau Report

Anti-polio drive

LAKKI MARWAT, Sept 13: Schools in the district will observe half day from September 19 to 21 in connection with the three-day anti-polio drive, says an official circular issued by EDO education on Tuesday.

The circular addressed to the heads of boys and girls primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools said the teachers would provide all sorts of assistance to the polio teams so as to make the polio eradication campaign a success.

The EDO said teachers would also highlight the importance of children’s immunisation against the crippling disease in morning assemblies.

“The activity will help convey a message to the people especially parents through students about the importance of immunisation campaign,” he maintained. The EDO directed the teachers to approach prayer leaders to ensure coverage of refusal cases. —Correspondent

Residents stage demo

KARAK, Sept 13: The residents of Bahaderkhel, Darshikhel and Khurram Mohammad Zai on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration against the non-provision of gas facility to the areas. They alleged the elected representatives were providing gas facility to the areas where they got majority votes.

The protesters alleged the elected representatives had adopted the step motherly attitude with the areas. They threatened to not let the lawmakers inaugurate gas supply to other areas of the tehsil until the gas supply was provided to their areas.

Meanwhile, a Peshawar High Court inspection team comprising Shamsher Ali Khan and Nafees Badshah on Tuesday visited the district courts to know about the difficulties judicial officials and lawyers were facing. The district bar association president Jan Alam advocate and other lawyers informed them about issues of the bar. —Correspondent

Joint control room

PESHAWAR, Sept 13: Peshawar traffic police and Rescue 1122 will set up a control room to ensure fast-track rescue operations in case of emergencies in the provincial metropolis.

This was decided at a meeting between DG Rescue 1122, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zakir Hussain Afridi and SSP Traffic Dr Mian Saeed Ahmad on Tuesday.

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the issues pertaining to road clearance to vehicles of Rescue 1122 in case of emergency in Peshawar. The SSP traffic promised to extend his full support to curb traffic problems the Rescue 1122 was facing during the incidents.

He said the joint control room would share information during occurrence of any emergency. “Traffic police will facilitate Rescue 1122 by providing professional assistance of traffic riders,” he added. —Bureau Report

JI’s ‘Inqilab’ conference

PESHAWAR, Sept 13: Jamaat-i-Islami, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, will hold “Islami Inqilab Conference” on September 18 in Nowshera to mobilise the people against the rampant corruption, unemployment and price hike in the country.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday the JI provincial naib amir Meraj-ud-Din said the JI central amir Syed Munawar Hassan will also address the conference.

The conference, he hoped, would prove the voice of general masses against corruption and favouritism, saying, the event would also herald beginning of a new  struggle against the rulers who were busy in embezzling national wealth, funds meant for the flood affected people and distributing Watan Cards on political basis. —Bureau Report
