POs, cop killed in encounter

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 2: Two proclaimed offenders and a policeman were killed in an encounter in the jurisdiction of Panyala police station on Monday.

The police on tip-off that Ishaq along with his accomplices had taken refuge at the house of his relative raided their hideout.

The police asked the POs to lay down arms and surrender but the criminals started firing. The police retaliated and killed PO Ishaq and his associate. Constable, Safdar Wiqar, who sustained serious injuries died in DHQ hospital. His funeral prayer was offered at police lines. —Correspondent

School for flood-hit children

CHARSADDA, May 2: A school of excellence for the flood-affected children was inaugurated here on Monday.

The school will be built by a German-based NGO in collaboration with READ Foundation Six hundred flood-affected children would be provided quality education in the school on annual basis.

The school costing Rs40 million will run as higher secondary school and enroll students from play group up to 12th grade.

The 3-storey seismic-complaint school building will have built classrooms, a modern computer laboratory and three fully-furnished science laboratories, syllabi-based audio-visual classroom resources, and library besides administration block.

The construction of the school will be completed in early 2012 and classes will start in the spring of the same year. —Correspondent

Students hold demo

PESHAWAR, May 2: Students and teachers of a private school held protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road on Monday against the Peshawar Development Authority for what they said illegal demolition of their school building at Hayatabad.

The students of Abdul Qadir Khan School System, holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans against destruction of their school also shouted against the PDA.

The protesters told media persons due to demolition of school they were forced to take classes in the open.

They demanded of the government to take action against the PDA administration and compensate them. —Bureau Report

Technical education

TIMERGARA, May 2: Provincial Minister for Technical Education and Minerals Nawabzada Mahmood Zeb has said the government is committed to improving technical and vocational education.

He was addressing a ceremony held at the vocational centre Talash on Monday to award certificates and tool kits among students. He highlighted the importance of technical education, saying, it was a source of income.

The minister said the population of Pakistan would double after 30 years and the governments would be unable to provide jobs to every youth. “Only skilled people will get jobs in that situation,” he said. The minister announced to set up a degree college in Talash. —Correspondent

Youth leadership

TIMERGARA, May 2: Youth are capable and talented to give the nation a true and honest leadership in future but they need to be properly guided.

This was stated by chairman of the law department of the University of Malakand, Attaullah Khan Adenzai, while speaking at the opening session of a five-day workshop on ‘youth leadership’ on Monday.

The workshop was organised by the UoM’s law department in collaboration with Bacha Khan Education Trust.

Selected students from all departments of the university and all students of the law department attended the session. —Correspondent

Faulty tube-wells

LAKKI MARWAT, May 2: Non-availability of funds to repair faulty tube-wells and delay in rehabilitation of damaged water supply lines has caused acute shortage of drinking water in the far off villages of Lakki Marwat.

Sources in the public health engineering department said on Monday over two dozen tube-wells were out of order for last several years, and the department had meager funds to carry out repair of damaged water supply schemes.

When contacted PHED executive engineer Qadeerullah Wazir said despite meager resources the department had started repairing the faulty tube-wells. —Correspondent

‘Sovereignty at stake’

PESHAWAR, May 2: Pakistan Muslim League-N, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, spokesman Arsal Khan Hoti has the CIA’s raid at a compound in Abbottabad in the wee hours of Monday, killing Osama Bin Ladin, had once again put Pakistan’s sovereignty at stake.

He said the dignity and honour of the country had been sold once again.

In a statement on Monday the PML-N leader said President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also head of the army, was having a dinner party, distributing ministries to PML-Q, at the time of the raid. —Bureau Report

Man facing life threats

PESHAWAR, May 2: A professional engineer, Manzoor Ahmed of Tank, who recently returned from Australia, is facing life threats but the police are not providing him security.

Talking to newsmen here on Monday Mr Ahmed said during his stay in Australia, local militants used to extort money from his family and when he returned they warned him to pay dollars or face their wrath.

“When my family refused to pay the extortion money, they sent me a message to visit them in the tribal region on April 11, but I declined,” he said, adding, two militants riding a bike opened fire at his residence on April 17. The complainant said the Tank police had refused to take action against the militants. —Bureau Report

US asked to leave Afghanistan

PESHAWAR, May 2: Senior advocate Barrister Baachaa on Monday said after the death of the American enemy number, there was no moral and legal justification for the US and its allies to carry on their ‘barbarism’ in Afghanistan.

In a press statement on Monday, Barrister Baachaa said death of Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad in an American army commando operation raised a number of questions.

He said, if Osama was living in Abbottabad for last many years, what was the justification for subjecting North Waziristan, a place hundreds of miles away from Abbottabad, to incessant drone attacks?

Barrister Baachaa asked the US to stop acting international bully and let the comity of nations live in peace. —Bureau Report
