KARACHI, July 3: The Sindh Minister for Human Rights, Nadia Gabol, has proposed the setting up of a Provincial Human Rights Watch Committee (PHRWC) to initiate instant legal action on cases pertaining to the violation of human rights.

The proposal came up during a meeting with a delegation of the regional directorate of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights at her office on Thursday.

Spelling out the aims of the proposed committee, the minister said that the PHRWC would review human rights situation with specific reference to the province and in proper coordination with the activities of all the relevant ministries, divisions, provincial government and the non-government organisations (NGOs).

The committee in question would also be made responsible to refer and recommend investigations regarding any incident of human rights violations.

Ms Gabol said that PHRWC also had been proposed to consider formulating programmes to create awareness about human rights at educational institutions besides developing and conducting informative programmes to foster public awareness of human rights, laws and remedies available against abuse.

Earlier, the delegation briefed the minister about the functioning and performance of the regional directorate.—APP
