KARACHI, April 22: Speakers representing various political parties and organisations paid rich tribute to late Abdul Sattar Afghani, the former mayor of the city, saying that he was the real architect of modern Karachi.
Naib Amir Jamat-i-Islami and central leader of the MMA Prof Ghafoor Ahmad said Abdul Sattar Afghani was an inspiration and guidance for politicians and social workers.
“He never compromised on principles or changed loyalties for personal gains. He died in a small flat in Lyari, in which he was born, despite being the mayor of Karachi for seven years,” Prof Gafoor said.
He said that the memoirs of Abdul Sattar Afghani should be compiled and published, as it was a national heritage.
Former Governor Sindh Mamnoon Hussain praised the humanitarian and upright character of Abdul Sattar Afghani, adding that he was respected even by his political opponents.
He said that as an MNA, late Afghani struggled for the restoration of democracy.
PPP leader Prof N.D. Khan stated that Afghani belonged to a noble breed, which had started to vanish.
PML-N leader Saleem Zia, former City Nazim Naimatullah Khan and others also spoke at the meeting organised at Faran Club on Saturday.
