KARACHI: Street crimes cause of rise in psycho cases

KARACHI, April 13: Health experts say that street crimes are the main cause of increase in psycho patients besides the incidents of suicide and divorce in Karachi. Referring to the first FIR of mobile snatching in Karachi lodged in July 2002, the experts viewed that with the increase in street crimes, the sense of insecurity among all the classes of society has also risen. “The ratio of psycho patients at hospitals testifies this claim,” they said.

According to statistics, there had been overall 82 per cent increase in psycho patients over these years in the city as compared to previous number of patients.

The Jinnah hospital registered 62 per cent increase; Civil Hospital 72 per cent, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital 48 per cent and Lyari General Hospital recorded 54 per cent increase. The private hospitals in the city also recorded increase in such patients. The Aga Khan Hospital reports 68 per cent increase in psycho patients while Liaquat National Hospital had 55 and Dr Ziaudin Hospital registered 42 per cent increase.

Mental disorder, blood pressure, anger and peevishness mainly affected the patients who had reported at these hospitals. A number of patients have feeling of complex and fear from surrounding environment.

Karachi Psychiatric Hospital Director Dr Mobeen Akhter said street crimes affected not a single person but the whole family. “All family members feel depression and fear,” he said.

Psychiatrists said street crimes were also affecting the home life of the people. The victims of street crime release their anger at home due to which their family matters come to critical stage resulting in rise in the incidents of divorce.

Dr Sabir of Civil Hospital Karachi said street crimes were causing depression and people used drugs to overcome it. “Our youth see their future dark owing to street crimes and take no more interest in positive activities,” he said.

The psychiatrist said 90 per cent of the reported patients comprised youth and children. “Young blood resists during street crimes that is why death rate of youngsters in offering resistance to street crimes is high,” he said.

The street crimes have also left an adverse effect on educational activities of youngsters and children, he said adding that the situation causes increase in number of drug users and creating criminal society.—PPI
