KARACHI, Oct 3: The discipline committee of the University of Karachi has asked a student reportedly involved in an incident of misconduct with a woman teacher of the political science department to record his statement in person before it on Wednesday, said sources on the campus.
An official of the university said that the student, A. Ahmad, in reply to a letter issued to him on Sept 29 had pleaded not guilty, maintaining that he respected the teacher, Samr Sultana, very much. My posture was never threatening during the demonstration at the department on Sept 28 and saying that the allegation that I had forced the teacher to suspend the teaching process was baseless, the student clarified his position.
The letter was considered by the discipline committee on Tuesday, following which a letter had been written again to the student giving him a chance of personal hearing, added the official.
In the meantime, the Karachi University Teachers’ Society on Tuesday decided that teachers would assemble at the Arts Auditorium of the university on a day-to-day basis to review the progress of the disciplinary committee probing in the harassment of a lady teacher.
The general body of teachers was held with its president, Sarwar Nasim, in the chair to express deep concern over the incident of alleged harassment of a woman teacher and demanded of the university administration to take stern action against the student or students responsible for the incident.
In other developments, the activists of two students groups on the campus got involved in altercation and incidents of beating each others, as a series of rivalries that emerged between them on Sept 27 over some issues.
There have been two incidents in which activists used baton and caused injuries to each other, said a source adding that a couple of motorcycles of activists belonging to one group were also damaged during the clashes.
