KARACHI, Sept 3: Merry-making firing in the air at a wedding ceremony claimed the life of a youth late on Saturday night in Malir.

Police said the wedding ceremony of two brothers Ali Mohammad and Ishaque was being held in Adam Hangoro Goth in Khokhrapar where some people fired gunshots in the air and held a display of firecrackers.

During the firing, a bullet pierced through the body of a youth, identified as Mohammad Asif, 25. He died on the spot and his body was taken to a hospital for autopsy.

The police have registered an FIR on the complaint of the deceased’s father.

Despite a ban on sale of crackers and firing in the air in wedding ceremonies, police have failed to contain such activities and no action is taken when participants of wedding ceremonies resort to firing in the air.

A ban in this regard has been imposed by the Sindh Home department and the IGP.

Residents of localities where such activities occur, make frantic calls to Madadgar-15, and police do come to those places, but as organizers of these ceremonies allegedly grease the palms of the officials, they get back to their respective police kiosks.

Most of such complaints at Madadgar-15 were received from North Nazimabad and Gulberg towns where people often spend sleepless nights due to deafening sounds of fire crackers and firing in the air during merry-making.
