KARACHI: Ibad urges community’s help to curb crime

KARACHI, July 3: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that the government is organizing participation of community at every level and positive and highly encouraging results of the process are emerging.

He was speaking at a get-together of residents of the Defence Housing Authority. Karachi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim, Sindh police chief Asad Jehangir, Sui Southern gas Company Managing Director Munawar Basir, Karachi Electricity Supply Company MD Brig Tariq Saddozai, DHA Residents Association president Javed Iqbal and others also spoke. Advisor to Chief Minister for Local Government, Waseem Akhtar, and former chief justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqi were also present.

The governor said crimes had been brought under control in various areas with the cooperation of police and the community.

He said attention was being paid to introducing citizen-police liaison committees in other parts of the country.

He recalled the cooperation extended by police and people in Ramazan, Muharram and Rabiul Awwal and on Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha. He said there had been record shopping on the two Eids during days as well as nights in a peaceful atmosphere. Dr Ibad said it was because of growing confidence of people in police that prayers were offered for them.

He said the way in which police thwarted the terrorist act at Madinatul Ilm by risking their own lives had boosted their department’s image. The effort also reflected measures taken for the security of life and property of people, he said.

Police and Rangers foiled major acts of terrorism with their limited resources, he said.

He said incidents of mobile phone snatching and dacoities in the DHA area had declined to a negligible level in June with the community’s cooperation.

He said a consumer rights council was being established at the Governor’s House on the pattern of the CPLC.

He said the council would take steps for the protection of consumers’ rights and monitoring of prices and quality of products. Initially, he said, the council would function in Karachi as a pilot project and later its scope would be extended to the entire province.

The governor said load-shedding was an important issue and full attention was being paid to it.

He said electricity supply to Karachi had become inadequate due to population explosion.

He said a project for overcoming power shortage would be completed in 18 months although its scheduled period was 30 months.

He said he had approached the federal government and received positive response for the resolution of the issues of load-shedding and supply of gas to industrial units in the province.

He said industrialists in Sindh would get gas supply facility like those in other areas of the country.—APP
