KARACHI: Updating of primary curricula ordered

KARACHI, April 28: Sindh Education Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro on Thursday directed officials of the curriculum bureau to remove outdated and obsolete topics from the textbooks being taught at primary level in Sindh. She stressed that topics apprising our youth of their actual history and civilization and enabling them to face the challenges of the modern world, should be included.

Dr Khuhro issued these directives after attending a briefing on the affairs of the Bureau of Curriculum Wing, Jamshoro.

Director Bureau of Curriculum Abdul Latif Siddiqui and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.

The minister further directed for the improvement of elementary colleges offering certification courses and training of teachers serving at these institutions.

“Teachers serving at teachers’ training colleges must be fluent in English so that they could impart quality training to their students” she stressed.

Mr Siddiqui informed that PC-I for improvement of elementary colleges and provision of furniture was being prepared and further said that shortage of teaching staff was also hampering the performance of these institutions.

“ Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) was approached to initiate process of hiring but so far it has not done so” he informed on which, the minister said if commission was not providing persons for these posts then bureau should fill these posts on ad hoc basis.

Later, Dr Khuhro met a group of teachers, and discussed issues facing the intermediate and degree colleges of Sindh.

The SPLA delegation led by Prof Liaquat Aziz and Prof Taj Joyo appealed to the minister to make uniform for college students mandatory, appoint senior college teachers as principal, issuance of notifications for promotion of teachers and appointment of on-duty officials at educational boards of Sindh by taking them in administrative control of the education department.

Dr Khuhro lauded the SPLA’s approach towards making the uniform mandatory for college students and directed Additional Secretary Tufail Ahmed Jumani to devise a comprehensive system for monitoring attendance of students and teachers besides steps for removal of party flags and removing of graffiti from colleges’ walls.-—PPI
