KARACHI: Police action condemned

Published April 16, 2005

KARACHI, April 15: The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors has condemned violence on journalists and photographers at the Karachi Cantonment railway station and termed it an attack on press freedom. A CPNE spokesman said in a statement the police not only resorted to a baton charge, detention of a number of journalists and snatching of cameras from photographers, but also manhandled and beat up two journalists with rifle butts.

The CPNE urged the government to compensate the damage caused to journalists and set up an inquiry commission to probe the incident.
