KARACHI: Extra-curricular activities in colleges stressed

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 10: Students and teachers of the Government College for Women, Nazimabad, arranged a “meena bazaar” on Saturday. About 70 stalls for display or sale of different items, including handicrafts, clothes, cosmetics, decoration pieces, eatables and books, were managed by groups of students or production houses. The students were attracted by fortune tellers and beauticians as well.

The fun fair was inaugurated by City Nazim Niamatullah Khan. After visiting the stalls, he remarked that the show was a successful one and a reflection of what woman students could do independently, with all the freedom, inside the college boundaries.

He called for encouragement of such activities in sync with the local culture and traditions.

The nazim said that such activities could be held by other colleges as well, but warned that efforts should be made

to protect the new generation from the harmful affects

of western civilization as it would take them to waywardness only.

Referring to the items placed at the stalls, he said those gave to understand that our children harboured extra ordinary talents. He particularly appreciated the handicrafts.

Earlier, the nazim laid the foundation stone of the college auditorium and gymnasium, which would be completed with a cost of Rs20 million in two years. Prof Rais Alvi, the EDO Higher Education, and Nasim Siddiqi, the adviser to nazim were also present on the occasion.

City Nazim was also informed about problems faced by students and teachers of the college due to open nullah in front of the college, which runs between the service roads and the main road. He was told that if the nullah was covered not only the surrounding environment would improve but the college faculty and other concerned would get parking space for their vehicles.

The students and teachers also complained about frequent power failures, shortage of teachers, lab-assistants and lab-attendants, and classrooms at the college. Nazim assured the college community of effective measures at the earliest.

He was speaking at a certificate awarding ceremony to participants and teachers of a ‘free English language course’ at FB Area on Saturday night.

The nazim said that learning of English language was also important, because it would help to spread the word of Allah around the globe.

He said that there should be no feeling of inferiority in learning languages.

The nazim was of the view that free courses of Arabic language should also be started.

He said that education was a must for the progress of the society.

The nazim said that Karachi had the honour to be the most literate city of the country.

Regarding the development of the city, he said that his administration had given a tax-free budget of Rs32 billion to the city.

Gulberg Town Nazim Farooq Niamatullah, Naib-Nazim Usman Baig, UC Nazim Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Faizanullah and others were also present.
