KARACHI: Two Edhi volunteers wounded in attack

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 29: Two relief workers at the Edhi Foundation's New Karachi centre were attacked and injured by two unidentified assailants in the small hours of Thursday, the foundation's spokesman said.

However, the police believed it a quarrel between two relief workers over some petty matter and not an attack. The relief workers said two suspects carrying daggers barged into the centre at 2:30 am in Sector 5-M and used abusive language against the relief organization.

They injured the clerk, Mohammad Shabbir, and ambulance driver Syed Ansar Nabi, at the centre. Before leaving, they also ransacked the centre, they added. After the incident, the injured workers informed the Edhi head office on wireless. Shortly afterwards, Edhi ambulances reached the spot and shifted the two workers to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

"We have not registered any FIR as those injured do not want police proceedings", a duty officer at the New Karachi police said. Recalling a recent incident, Rizwan Edhi told Dawn that a few weeks back some persons identifying themselves as workers of a political party had come to the Edhi Child Home Korangi.

They told the staff they have information that arms and ammunition were buried on the premises of the Child Home. They dug up the place and left. It was the work of police and they should have turned up with such an information.
