HYDERABAD, Dec 23: Over 12 students of Sindh and Jinnah law colleges, under the banner of Joint Action Committee, continued their token hunger strike outside the local press club on Tuesday against the increase in tuition fees.
Talking to journalists, an action committee leader, Mumtaz Lashari, said that annual tuition fees of law colleges had been increased from Rs5,190 to Rs12,000 for LLB-I, from Rs5,140 to Rs16,000 for part-II and from Rs6,140 to Rs18,000 for part-III.
Terming the fee increase totally unjustified. he said that the move was said to be aimed at improving the standard of law education but added it could not be improved without changing the educational system.
He said that the real aim was to deprive the poor students of their inherent right to seek higher education.
They demanded that the structure of fees, being charged presently, should be continued otherwise a large number of the students would have to drop out due to the increase in tuition fees.
DEMO: A group of students of the University of Sindh held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Tuesday.
They were demanding removal of the director, admissions, transport officer and the girls’ hostel provost, vacating of the B-Block hostel from the police and withdrawal of the increase in fees.
They said the statement issued by the university registrar was not correct.
The registrar had said the students’ action committee did not enjoy the support of the majority of students.
