KARACHI: Blackmailers sentenced

KARACHI, April 11: An additional district and sessions judge, West, sentenced on Friday a photographer and a dismissed police constable to various prison terms for blackmailing young women after taking their nude pictures.

Judge Akhtar A. Chaudhry sentenced former ASI Sohail Akhtar Butt to 20 month’ rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs2,000 and co-accused Haider Hasan to 14 months’ RI with an equal amount of fine after they were found guilty of blackmailing a victim woman on the basis of her nude photograph.

The Mominabad police had registered the case against the two blackmailers on November 21, 1999 on the complaint of a young woman who alleged that the accused had taken her nude pictures to blackmail her.

According to the prosecution, the two accused took the nude pictures of many girls promising them a career in modelling.

The accused had asked the complainant to pay Rs50,000 to them, otherwise they would make her nude pictures public.

The two were caught red-handed at a house where they were waiting to receive the money from the woman.

The district and sessions judge, West, Nuzhat Ara Alvi, sentenced a man to seven years’ RI for attempting to kill policemen during a shootout.

Accused Aijaz Ahmed was booked and arrested in 1997 by the Orangi Extension police for attacking a police party.

MAJOR ZARGHAM CASE: The judicial magistrate, South, Rahmat Ullah Moro, who is holding an inquiry into a direct complaint against the former chief of the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee, Jameel Yousuf, and 19 others for involving an army officer in a Hudood case, fixed April 19 for hearing the legal aspects of the application of the Sindh police chief.

IG Syed Kamal Shah, who had been summoned by the JM on the application of Major Zargham, has moved an application seeking his exemption from personally appearing in the court.

Major Mohammed Zargham Mirza had lodged a direct complaint with the judicial magistrate for registration of criminal case against 20 respondents, including Jamil Yousuf and then SSP South A. D Khawaja, under sections 182, 500 and 506 of PPC.

Those who have been made respondents in the complaint included Zaeem Iqbal, ASP, Lubna Tiwana, then SHO of Women Police Station, Inspector Abdul Hakim Bangash, Azhar Ellahi and Sharf Memon.
