SUKKUR, May 22: More than a dozen people sustained injuries when a devastating fire gutted 26 houses in two adjacent villages near Kashmor late Tuesday.
The fire started from one of the houses, when inmates were busy cooking, in Shah Dost Golo village. It engulfed the entire house swiftly and swept through other houses. After turning each and every article in all the structures built in the village to ashes the blaze engulfed livestock before playing havoc in the neighbouring village of Lakhmir Golo where more houses were gutted.
Firefighters failed to respond to the villagers’ SOS calls promptly.
The villagers continued their struggle to extinguish the fire for six hours but it had already gutted 26 houses and killed nearly 100 cattle alive before they could succeed. Some of the injured were identified as Manzoor Ahmed, Muhammad Hayat Golo, Roshan Din, Amir Bux, Shah Mir and Mehboob.
The affected villagers said that all of their cash, belongings, livestock and food stocks were turned into ashes and they were rendered homeless by the blaze.
None of the local officials could reach the villages till Wednesday afternoon.
POWER BREAKDOWN: The Hesco’s operation division in Sukkur has announced shutdown of the 11kv feeders for repair and maintenance work starting May 22. The work will continue till May 30.
During the work, the announcement said, power supply to different areas would remain suspended/disrupted for eight to 10 hours.
Power supply to areas of Bunder Road-police post, Tariq Ice Factory and Shaikh Shaheen Road during the same timings on May 23.
On May 26, power supply to areas from GRI station to Bolan hotel would be affected from 6am to 2pm and in the areas from Katti Bazaar to Tonga Stand, Afghan Hotel and Dhak Road, supply would remain suspended from 6am to 4pm on May 29.
Electricity in areas of Liaqat Chowk to March Bazaar, Jinnah Cloth Market and Shahi Bazaar would be disrupted from 6am to 4pm on May 28 and in Baberki Bazaar to Hamdard Dawakhana and Thalla Chincher Gitti areas on May 30 during the same timings.
