Inflation rises in six months

ISLAMABAD, Jan 12: The Inflation rate based on sensitive price indicator (SPI), consumer price index (CPI) and wholesale price index (WPI) during the first six months of this fiscal surged by 2.1 per cent, 2.57 per cent and 3.03 per cent respectively in comparison to the same period last year.

Official figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, showed that the inflation during the July-December period of 2000-01 increased by 5.17 per cent, 4.91 per cent and 6.28 per cent over the corresponding span of 1999-2000, and, against 1998-1999 it registered an increase of 2.05 per cent, 3.3 per cent and 1.87 per cent, respectively.

The analysis of data for the last three years for the July- December period indicated that the increase registered in SPI, CPI, and WPI was lower as compared to 2000-01 but higher as compared to 1999-2000 except CPI.

APP ADDS: The inflation rates based on SPI and CPI for December 2001 increased by 1.99 and 1.88 per cent, respectively, while WPI decreased by 1.46 per cent over December 2000.

It increased in December 2000 by 6.05 per cent, 5.05 and 10.58 per cent, respectively, over December 1999 and in December 1999, the rate of inflation for SPI and CPI increased by 0.07 and 3.03 per cent, respectively, but WPI decreased by 0.13 per cent over December 1998.

An analysis of data for the last three years indicates that the increase in SPI, CPI and WPI during December 2001 was lower as compared to December 2000, but lower in case of CPI and WPI as compared to December 1999, except for SPI.

The inflation rates based on SPI, CPI and WPI for December 2001, decreased by 1.09 per cent, 0.65 and 0.65 per cent, respectively, over November 2001.

During December 2000, SPI and CPI decreased by 1.16 and 0.45 per cent, respectively, but WPI increased by 1.15 per cent over November 2000. However, SPI, CPI and WPI for December 1999 decreased by 0.94 per cent, 0.11 and 0.31 per cent, respectively, over November 1999.

The Consumer Price Index during December 2001 decreased by 0.65 per cent over November 2001, and increased by 1.88 per cent over corresponding month last year.

The Wholesale Price Index during December 2001 showed a decrease of 0.65 per cent over November 2001. It also decreased by 1.46 per cent over the corresponding month last year.
