Van blast kills security guard in Quetta

QUETTA, May 27: A security guard of a private company was killed and another was seriously injured when a powerful bomb planted in a van exploded in the parking lot of the Sui Southern Gas Company office, late Sunday night, a senior police officer told Dawn.

DIG Operations Rehmatullah Niazi said that security guard Hamidullah, 60, was killed on the spot while another guard Mullah Dad suffered serious injuries and was admitted to Quetta Civil Hospital.

The blast completely destroyed the Suzuki van and damaged some other vehicles and windowpanes of the SSGC building.

In another incident, a home-made bomb was thrown into the house of councillor Aziz Qureshi, but his son immediately threw it out of the house. The bomb exploded, injuring police constable Tahir-ul-Hasan who was passing by the area. The constable was admitted to a local hospital.

Also on Sunday, police impounded a car rigged with 25 kg of high explosives. It was parked near the official residences of Khuzdar DCO and DPO.

"The car was rigged with high explosives to blow up residences of government officials," Kalat Range DIG Ghulam Shabir said at a Press conference.

He said police had been informed about the unattended car parked near the house of the DCO. He said a detonator exploded when police tried to remove the car. However, the explosives did not blow up.
