THE International Day of Organ Donation after Death is being observed globally today (Aug 13), reminding us all that while death is a reality from which no human being can escape, a person can still help another human being even after death through organ donation. Brain death is an irreversible condition in which all functions of the brain stop permanently. Once brain death is confirmed as per the relevant medical and legal criteria, suitable organs can be donated for transplantation. This is a perfectly legal process in many countries, including Pakistan.
Thousands of people in Pakistan suffer from irreversible failure of organs, such as the kidneys, liver, heart and lungs. For many, transplantation is the only chance of survival. But because of the shortage of donated organs, many patients die while waiting. A deceased donor can give a new life to several people. Kidneys, liver, heart, lungs and pancreas can be donated, while corneas and other tissues can also help many people.
A recent workshop paper published in The Transplantation (April 2026) discussed barriers to deceased organ donation in low-income countries. These include lack of government support, inadequate funding and infrastructure, cultural and religious misconceptions, poor coordination between institutions, and shortage of trained professionals. These problems are also relevant to Pakistan. We have a legal framework and institutions responsible for transplantation, but stronger imple- mentation is needed. Donor coordinators in ICUs, proper training of medical staff, dedicated funding, and continuous public awareness campaigns can improve the situation.
In my own professional experience, there have been times when objection by just one family member derailed the whole process, indicating the need for mass public awareness. People need to understand that organ donation after death can save lives and is a humanitarian act.
We should pay tribute to the families in Pakistan who have donated the organs of their loved ones after their death. On this International Day of Organ Donation after Death, let us move from fear to hope through organ donation, and save lives.
