PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Wednesday urged the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to accelerate rehabilitation efforts in flood-hit Chitral and said the National Highway Authority (NHA), too, should ensure early restoration of the damaged roads.
He also called for speedy relief operations by the NDMA in Chitral and the establishment of more warehouses in the province to ensure a prompt response to future emergencies.
The governor was speaking to reporters after receiving at least 10-truck relief consignments sent in by the Sindh government for flood-affected people in Chitral.
The relief goods, comprising food items, drinking water, tents and other non-food items, will be transported to Chitral by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for distribution to the disaster-hit families, according to a statement from the Governor’s House here.
The governor said that the assistance reflects inter-provincial solidarity in times of crisis.
He thanked the government of Sindh for extending timely assistance, saying Sindh has always stood with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in difficult times.
Mr Kundi said thatPresident Asif Ali Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had consistently supported the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He added that the relief supplies were dispatched immediately after a request was made for assistance to the flood victims of Chitral.
Highlighting the need to strengthen disaster preparedness, the governor said that only one of the NDMA’s 11 warehouses was located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa despite the province being the most vulnerable to floods. He demanded establishment of three or four additional relief warehouses, including in Malakand and Dera Ismail Khan.
Mr Kundi said that while the Sindh government’s relief consignment had reached Chitral, the provincial government’s aid had yet to reach the affected people.
He emphasised that relief activities should remain free from politics and that timely assistance to flood victims must remain the top priority.
The governor urged the federal and provincial authorities as well as welfare organisations to step forward and support the flood-hit population.
He also said thatthe provincial administration should immediately dispatch teams to the affected areas and ensure close monitoring of relief operations.
Officials of the Sindh PDMA, PPP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Mohammad Ali Shah Bacha, Pakistan Red Crescent Society Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chairman Farzand Ali Wazir and the PRCS provincial secretary were also present on the occasion.
