SUKKUR: Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho has asked senior police officers to make operations against criminal elements more effective and result-oriented.
He was chairing a high-level meeting in the office of the Sukkur DIG to review the progress of ‘Operation Najat-i-Mehran’, besides the overall law and order and other issues relating to policing in the Sukkur and Larkana ranges.
Later, speaking to media personnel, the IGP said that a zero-tolerance policy against criminal elements was adopted in the operation, launched mainly to restore complete peace in the dacoit-infested riverine areas of upper Sindh.
He said that the police were also carrying out a province-wide crackdown against drug dealers.
Cases had been registered against suspected narcotics sellers while efforts were underway to improve the investigation system within the police department, he added.
IGP Odho stressed the need for timely and effective investigations so that cases could be brought to their logical conclusion without unnecessary delays.
During the meeting, according to an official statement, the IG was briefed on the progress, targets achieved and overall performance of the Operation Najat-i-Mehran, particularly police actions against criminal elements in the riverine areas.
The Sukkur range DIG (who also holds the charge of Larkana range) presented facts and figures regarding police operations against dacoit gangs, including arrests, reported killings, recovery of weapons and achievements.
The meeting also reviewed the law-and-order and crime situation in Sukkur and Larkana ranges and the overall performance of the police force.
He ordered that operations in the riverine areas be conducted through a coordinated strategy, greater use of modern technology and effective utilisation of available resources.
He also directed police officers to intensify efforts to protect the lives and property of citizens and establish sustainable peace.
The IG further instructed field officers to ensure an effective presence in their respective areas, prevent crime and provide prompt redressal to public complaints.
Besides the Sukkur/Larkana DIG, the meeting was attended by SSPs and heads of the Special Branch, CTD, Rapid Response Force, Crime Management Unit and Investigation.
A delegation of prominent citizens representing different walks of life in Sukkur and Larkana called on the IGP in the DIG Office.
The provincial police chief assured the delegation that protection of citizens’ life and property and maintenance of peace remained his department’s top priorities.
He listened to the concerns shown by the delegation and the suggestions presented by them. The IGP directed the officers concerned to take necessary measures to address their issues.
