UNCHECKED carbon dioxide emission is one of the top environmental hazards currently affecting our population. Under the light of recent developments, the government is looking forward to the newly introduced initiative named the Punjab Liquid Tree Project, which has been described by the chief minister as one of the most advanced scientific methods for addressing carbon emissions and smog in cities. However, the initiation of such a project without prior and proper research of the local ecology and demographics might lead to the project’s failure in the days ahead.
Solar-powered biological tanks consist of four major and essential components. The first is the plexiglass container, a clear and lightweight material that resembles glass but is significantly stronger and less prone to breakage. The second is a solar-powered pressure pump responsible for drawing in atmospheric air containing carbon dioxide into the tank.
The core element of the system is algae, which absorbs ambient carbon dioxide and, using natural sunlight or low-intensity artificial lighting, converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and biomass at a rate reportedly 10-50 times higher than traditional trees. The final component is a monitoring and calculation system based on artificial intelligence (AI) responsible for quantifying carbon absorption and oxygen production.
The technology is impressive and it does provide a potential solution for carbon sequestration and conversion in urban environments, but there is a catch. The AI systems used for monitoring and computation require significant energy and cooling resources for data processing, placing undue additional pressure on already vulnerable environmental resources. Thus, this high-tech solution risks creating a serious environmental problem while attempting to solve another. It is a short-term intervention, not a long-term solution.
The proper method of addressing this issue involves the plantation of native trees which not only fulfil their ecological niche of carbon sequestration, but also contribute significantly to the growth of the ecological environment, promoting habitat conservation and biodiversity, particularly for the avian species, while also improving our overall soil ecology.
