New-age VCs

Published Updated

THE proposal to increase the age limit for vice-chancellors (VCs) of public-sector medical universities from 65 to 75 years has raised an important question about the future direction of higher education in Pakistan. While experience is undoubtedly valuable, medical universities today face challenges that require more than seniority. Medical education is being transformed by artificial intelligence (AI), digital health, simulation-based learning, data analytics and clinical decision support systems. To remain competitive, our institutions need leaders who understand these technologies and can drive innovation.

The issue is not age itself, but whether our leadership is equipped to prepare students and healthcare systems for an increasingly digital future. Around the world, successful universities are embracing leaders who combine academic excellence with technological literacy.

Rather than extending age limits, policymakers should focus on selection processes that prioritise leadership cap-ability, innovation and digital competence. Pakistan’s medical universities need leaders who can preserve past achieve-ments while confidently navigating the opportunities and challenges of an AI-driven world. The future of medical education depends not on how long leaders have served, but on how effectively they can lead institutions into the future.
