SAHIWAL:Students planted around 200 fruit trees on the premises of the University of Sahiwal as part of the ongoing monsoon plantation drive on Monday.
The initiative taken under the banner of ‘Green Youth Movement (GYM)’ aims to make the varsity campus greener, promote environmental sustainability, and help preserve local biodiversity amid changing climate conditions.
The drive was sponsored and facilitated by an environmentalist, Khizer Wali Chishti.
Economics department Chairman Dr Rana Adeel, who is also the focal person for GYM, told Dawn that students were actively engaged in the campaign, each planting and symbolically owning a tree.
Mr Chishti said that during the campaign, the students planted guava, jamun, lemon, and pomegranate plants because of their higher survival chances during the monsoon season. He said that a Miyawaki forest will also be planted on the campus soon.
Estate Officer Ikram Ahmed recalled that the university had earlier conducted a plantation drive with the support of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), planting more than 500 indigenous plants in front of academic blocks.
On the occasion, Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Akhter presented a souvenir to Mr Chishti in recognition of his contribution to the cause of a clean and green environment.
PATWARI HELD: Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), Pakpattan, arrested the patwari of Halqa Chak 9/KB for allegedly accepting Rs30,000 as bribe for issuing a document related to a piece of agricultural land.
According to ACE officials, the complainant, Muhammad Shafi, a resident of Chak 9/KB, had applied for the issuance of a document required for selling his land. The complainant alleged that Halqa Patwari Mazhar Gondal demanded Rs30,000 as bribe for issuing the document.
Acting on the complaint, ACE Circle Officer Kashif Hashmi, accompanied by the area magistrate, conducted a raid and arrested Mazhar, recovering signed currency from his possession.
A case 16/26 has been registered against the patwari under Section 161 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 5/2/47 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. ACE Regional Director Basharat Nabi said the department is showing zero tolerance for bribery cases.
FEARED DROWNED: A young boy is feared to have drowned in a canal near Chak 15/SP.
As per Rescue 1122, they were informed that a 15-year-old boy allegedly fell into the canal near Chak 15/SP while washing his hands.
Rescue 1122 teams reached the scene and launched a serch operation, with the help of locals. Till the filing of the report, the boy could not be found.
The rescuers say that the canal is flowing at full strength due to the ongoing monsoon rains, making the search operation more challenging.
