LAHORE: Pakistan’s first-ever Explosive Detection System (EDS) was inaugurated at the cargo terminal of Sialkot International Airport on Tuesday.
The state-of-the-art system is aimed at strengthening cargo security, enhancing operational efficiency and facilitating exports in line with international standards.
The EDS machine was jointly inaugurated by SIAL Chairman Hassan Ali Bhatti and Export Development Fund (EDF) head Omer Saeed.
SIAL Vice Chairman Waqas Afzal, CEO retired air vice martial (AVM) Tanweer Ashraf Bhatti and directors were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Hassan Bhatti termed the EDS installation a matter of immense pride and honour for Sialkot International Airport.
“The installation of this advanced EDS is another testament to our strong collaboration and shared commitment towards facilitating Pakistan’s exports,” he said and added the EDS has the capability to scan up to 1,800 bags per hour, significantly improving the speed and efficiency of cargo handling operations.
He said the system would ensure swift movement of export consignments while strengthening security protocols. “It sends a strong message to the global market that exports from Pakistan meet the highest standards of security and operational excellence,” he added.
EDF Chairman Omer Saeed said the EDS installation would undoubtedly facilitate exporters and further strengthen Sialkot’s position as a leading export hub of Pakistan “The inauguration of the EDS system represents a major step forward in modernising cargo operations at Sialkot International Airport and reinforces the airport’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s growing export sector through innovation, efficiency, and international best practices.
