LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday directed police across Punjab to register cases against individuals involved in the illegal dumping of waste.

Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing a set of petitions concerning smog and other environmental issues.

The judge also directed the deputy commissioner of Lahore to install signboards at locations that are not designated waste disposal sites in order to discourage unlawful dumping.

During the proceedings, Justice Karim expressed displeasure over the disposal of garbage at an unauthorised dumping site by a contractor of the Paragon City housing scheme. He instructed a provincial law officer to ask police to summon the contractor and warn him that such conduct would not be tolerated in future.

Report sought

The court also sought a report from the Director General of Rescue 1122 regarding the burning of waste within the housing scheme.

Justice Karim further ordered all station house officers of police across the province to register FIRs against those involved in illegal waste dumping.

Earlier, a deputy director of the provincial environment department submitted a report detailing action taken against the contractor of the housing society for dumping waste unlawfully.

The judge also restrained the cantonment board from using the site for waste disposal.

The hearing was adjourned until June 11.
