KARACHI: A police constable was killed when the driver of a car hit him in when he signalled the vehicle to stop for checking in Gulshan-i-Maymar, officials said.
SITE-Superhighway Industrial Area SHO Mohammed Nawaz said a police mobile van was conducting snap-checking at Maymar Mor on Saturday when policemen signalled a car to stop.
However, the driver of the car, along with another person, did not stop and tried to speed away and in the process struck Constable Abdul Manan, 36, leaving him critically injured.
He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The SHO said other policemen chased the fleeing suspects, who also hit the mobile van and damaged it. However, police succeeded in arresting both suspects, identified as Agha Jan and Naseem.
He added that initial investigations revealed the seized car was loaded with chhalia (betel nut) and was being driven with a fake number plate. The suspects are chhalia smugglers, he said, adding that further investigations were underway.
