China offers to mediate Pak-Afghan tensions

WASHINGTON: China told the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Monday that it has been working to reduce tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan and is prepared to continue playing what it described as a constructive role in easing the situation.

Addressing a UNSC meeting on Afghanistan, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, warned that terrorist groups continue to operate from Afghan territory.

He pointed out that TTP, Al Qaeda, ISL-K and other terrorist groups remain active in Afghanistan, “posing serious threats to Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries.”

The Chinese envoy also referred to the recent escalation between Islamabad and Kabul. “China is deeply concerned and saddened by this development,” said Ambassador Fu while calling on both sides to “remain calm and exercise restraint”.
