Girl in Faisalabad shot dead for refusing marriage proposal
TOBA TEK SINGH: A female student was shot dead on Saturday by a vagabond in Partapnagar locality of Faisalabad for refusing his marriage proposal.
Reports said accused Ahmad Afzal of Rahmania Road used to catcall deceased Fatima Bibi when she went to a tuition centre. The victim snubbed his attempt over which the accused opened fire. She died instantly when a bullet hit her in the neck.
Factory Area police shifted the body to the DHQ hospital for autopsy.
Faisalabad CPO Sahibzada Bilal Umar said the suspect had been arrested. Sources said the accused told the police that he killed her for refusing his marriage proposal.
VISIT: Charge d’Affaires of the embassy of Indonesia to Pakistan Rahmat Hindiarta Kusuma on Saturday said that bilateral ties in agriculture, academic and trade would be strengthened to benefit from each other’s experiences.
Addressing a meeting at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Saturday, he stressed upon the need to enhance people-to-people contact to bring both nations closer. He said Pakistani students were studying in Indonesia and his country was providing ample scholarship opportunities to them.
He suggested enhanced research collaboration and faculty and student exchange for improvement in the agricultural field. He hailed the steps being taken by UAF for the agricultural sector.
UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali said that strengthening relations would help in meeting the challenges of the modern era. He said that food security was one major concern and 40pc of the population was malnourished. He said that UAF was the first university in Pakistan to start the human nutrition and dietetics degree programme. He briefed about various high-yielding wheat, maize, cotton, sugarcane, mango, okra, soybean, backyard poultry, and others varieties developed by UAF scientists, contributing to national food security.
The VC said that the establishment of the language center would break down the language barrier and promote mutual understanding. Language courses could be started at UAF with the collaboration of Indonesia, he added.
Rahmat Hindiarta also visited the expo center, Center for Advanced Studies and Pak-Korea Nutrition Center and lauded UAF products and knowledge exchange programmes.
RECOVERED: Motorway M-3 police recovered 2,000 meters of stolen highway safety fence from Pirmahal in a raid on Saturday.
National Highway and Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed told reporters that the stolen fence was recovered from an employee of a former motorway construction contractor.
He said that during investigation, it was discovered that suspect Nadeem Akhtar hid the stolen fence in an empty plot near his residence. He said that local police and National Highway Authority (NHA) officials were also present at the time of the recovery. He said the stolen fence was handed over to the local police and police were conducting raids to arrest the accused.
The spokesperson said the fence was used to prevent the entry of animals onto the motorway. A number of fatal accidents had taken place because of the theft, he added.
ARRESTED: An accused in a 20-year old murder case was arrested by the Jaranwala Saddar police in Faisalabad on Saturday.
Police claimed that accused Amer had murdered Naveed Ahmad and injured his brother Rashid in Chak 60 GB over a minor quarrel in 2005 and had disappeared from the area.
Meanwhile, Thikriwala police arrested four accused of a double murder case in Faisalabad.
A press release said accused Muhammad Zeeshan, Abdul Sattar, Ali Hassan and Muhammad Umar had axed to death Abdul Samad and Ishtiaq Ahmad in Chak 241 RB three days ago over an old enmity.
