Al Jazeera has spoken to Ghassan Abu Sittah, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who worked extensively at Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City during the conflict, about today’s medical evacuations of children out of Gaza.

Here’s what he said from Beirut: “I feel great pain for the families who have been denied the chance to accompany the children; the 50 children who have been evacuated have only been allowed one accompanying adult who has to either be a male over 55 or female — no siblings.

“So the cruelty is even intrinsic in what is supposed to be a humanitarian gesture. Nevertheless, these children need urgent medical care,” he added.

“According to the Ministry of Health, there are around 2,400 children who need immediate care. Some of them have cancers, congenital abnormalities and others were wounded in this war.”
