LAHORE: The Hayer police lodged a case of honour killing of a young girl 14 years after the incident.

The first information report (FIR) was registered against the parents of the girl, Sofia, who had contracted court marriage with one Shahid Ali, a resident of Bedian Road.

Shahid alleged in the FIR that he had contracted marriage with Sofia of Chungi Amar Sidhu, 14 years back. He said the parents of his wife had taken her back to their home, promising that she would be sent back to his home within days. Later, Shahid said, his in-laws hurled serious life threats at him and he was forced to leave the city to avoid any untoward incident. He started living in Sahiwal where he contracted second marriage but his parents remained in contact with his in-laws to get his first wife back but to no avail.

Recently, it transpired that his in-laws had allegedly killed Sofia in the name of honour and threw her body in a local canal to conceal the crime, he said.

A police official said the matter was first referred to the Lahore Organized Crime Unit (OCU) for detailed inquiries into the allegations leveled by Shahid.

On Tuesday, he said, the Hayer police registered a murder case against the parents of the deceased girl after the allegations of her murder proved true.
