ISLAMABAD: Sikh leaders gathered at a symposium in the capital to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions of Sikhism, highlighting the significant contributions of the Sikh community to global peace and prosperity.
The symposium, titled ‘Sikhism: Contributions to global peace and prosperity and role in the Far East’ was organised by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) on Tuesday, bringing together experts from the Far East region to share their insights and experiences.
Speakers at the event praised the preservation and upkeep of Sikh holy sites in Pakistan, including Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur and Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hassanabdal, crediting local Sikh communities and the Pakistani government for their efforts.
Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar delivered a keynote address, emphasising Pakistan’s significance as the birthplace of Sikhism and the respect accorded to Sikh sacred sites and pilgrims since the country’s creation.
Participants highlighted the values of peace, equality, selfless service and empowerment embedded in Sikhism, which inspire collective action for promoting peace-loving, service-oriented and inclusive societies.
They also emphasised the Sikh diaspora communities’ contributions to global peace and harmony, citing the principle of ‘Seva’ (selfless service) as a motivating factor.
The symposium showcased the Sikh tradition of Langars, free communal kitchens serving food to those in need, regardless of background.
Delegates shared examples of Sikh diaspora communities’ service initiatives in their countries, emphasising their contributions to global peace and harmony.
Key participants included Prof Dr Harwindar Singh, Founder, Harvey Gill Associates (Malaysia); Adv. Dato Pretam Singh, Founder, Pretam Singh Nor & Co. (Malaysia); Gurbax Singh Bains, Supreme Sikh Council (Australia); Prof Dr Manjit Singh, Partner, MSSMR (Malaysia); and Adv. Sucha Singh, former President of the Malaysian Gurdwara Council.
The symposium aimed to promote understanding and appreciation of Sikhism’s contributions to global peace and prosperity, fostering greater collaboration and exchange between Sikh communities worldwide.
