Every now and then, we come across issues that could have been handled easily through proper management and adequate planning. The shortage of medicines in the market is one such crisis. The regulatory authorities, including the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap), are there to ensure uninterrupted provision of medicines. Also, the relevant departments of pharmaceutical companies are there to ensure that the supply chain remains functional. But none of the stakeholders has been able to do the job.

IGNORING LIAQUAT: Marking the 75th anniversary of national independence, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has issued a commemorative note of Rs75 denomination. It features images of the Quaid-i-Azam, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Although the contribution of these personalities is undeniable, it would have been appropriate to include the picture of Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan as well. Why? The name says it all.

LOW SALARIES: The managements of private schools, especially those located in small towns and metropolitan suburbs, exploit their teachers by paying them low salaries. Needless to say, teachers quit the job as soon as they get a better opportunity. This affects the performance of the students. The government should ensure that all private schools are paying decent salaries to their teachers through banks so that the transactions could be monitored.

KILLING MERIT: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Nawabshah, recently announced various positions of BPS-16 and 17. A senior officer working in BPS-18 offered me a post of ‘Assistant’ if I could dish out Rs1.5 million. This is sheer injustice to those preparing to apply for the job on the basis of merit. Such tactics must come to an end in order to protect and promote merit.
