Students advised to promote cultural diversity

PESHAWAR: Speaker at an event here on Saturday asked students to promote cultural diversity by appreciating its strength to forge unity, peace and mutual respect towards national identity.

They stressed the need for raising awareness among students regarding indigenous tangible and intangible cultural heritage, art, literature, history and local heroes.

Pashto Society of Edwardes College Peshawar arranged annual Pashto cultural day on its open lawn here on Saturday. Students, faculty members and old Edwardians attended the event. Around 22 stalls were set up, showcasing traditional dresses, beverages, musical instruments, dry fruits, dishes and handicrafts reflective of the entire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including tribal districts.

The handicrafts and bookstalls attracted people in a large number. A lone stall of special persons of jewellery makers turned out to a must visit spot.

Senior Sitar player Zainullah Ustad with his five-member orchestra mesmerised the participants with traditional Pashto numbers. Folk artists including Rashid Khan, Shaukat Swati and Jalal Khan also performed. Groups of students presented rounds of Waziri and Khattak dance. Enthusiast visitors also enjoyed traditional tonga rides alongside bites of Chapli Kabab, Shinwari Tikka, Swabi Katawa and green tea.

Prof Shujat Ali Khan, principal of Edwardes College, in his remarks said that celebrating cultural diversity was a commendable job, asking students to continue promoting the cause of national identity. He added such healthy activities on the campus helped students to know about local art, history and literature.

Noted poet Prof Abaseen Yousafzai, who was chief guest on the occasion, said that such events helped students get connected to cultural roots. He added that the historic Edwardes College had been home to groom up students with a broad vision and lofty thoughts of inclusivity.
