DISCRIMINATION: One can observe discrimination and nepotism during the distribution of ration bags among flood victims in various areas. The entire process seems to have boiled down to merely photo sessions, and those who are averse to the idea of publicly extending their hands to seek aid are widely ignored. Is it not possible to hand over relief supplies without forcing people to compromise their dignity? All it takes is to keep the photographer away.

POOR MAINTENANCE: The University of Karachi is considered one of the prestigious universities in the country. However, its infrastructure is in a dilapidated condition for long. Due to poor maintenance, the roof of the Sociology Department recently collapsed. The buildings of several other departments are in an equally dangerous state. The matter has raised safety concerns among the students and the faculty alike. The university administration needs to ensure proper maintenance of its infrastructure.

ANOMALY: A Sindh government advertisement recently claimed that because of the “continued rapid increase in dengue and malaria cases, the Sindh Healthcare Commission has announced a half per cent reduction in the prices of tests conducted to diagnose these diseases”. However, in the accompanying table showing both existing and revised prices, the reduction is 50 per cent (even higher in some cases). The government should check the educational qualification of the person(s) who drafted and approved the said advertisement.

People in Karachi should be very careful and take all possible precautionary measures. They should avoid going out late at night and leave their expensive cellphones home for their own safety.
