Welder dies in hospital fire

KARACHI: A man burned to death while another suffered serious wounds when a fire broke out in a private hospital on M. A. Jinnah Road on Monday, police and fire officials said.

City SSP Sarfraz Nawaz Shaikh said that a welder was doing his work at the hospital when his clothes caught fire. In an attempt to put out the fire, he used an oxygen cylinder assuming it as a fire extinguisher which intensified the fire killing him on the spot.

The fire spread to the record room of the hospital where an employee also suffered burn injuries. The SSP said the condition of the injured man was critical and his survival chances were very low.

The record room was damaged badly in the fire.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson, whose ambulance shifted the body and injured to the Burns Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, said the injured suffered 90 per cent burns.
