KARACHI, Oct 27: Tributes were paid to the late Justice Abdul Hafeez Memon, who died on Sept 29, at a full Sindh High Court reference here on Thursday. The reference was addressed by Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed, Advocate-General Anwar Mansoor Khan, SHC Bar Association President Akhtar Hussain and federal government counsel Mahmood Alam Rizvi.

The speakers recalled that Justice Memon was appointed a judge of the Sindh-Balochistan High Court in 1973 but was not invited to take a fresh oath under the provisional constitution order in 1981. He was appointed chairman of a commission constituted in 1988 to review cases of public servants removed during Gen Zia’s martial law.

He was directly appointed a judge of the Supreme Court and Acting Chief Justice of the SHC in 1994. He ceased to be the CJ under the 1996 Judges Case verdict and retired from the SC in 1997.

He was elected president of the United Memon Jamaat in 1981 and a member of the World Memon Organization board of management in 2002.
