KARACHI: Navy have all but qualified for the knockout stage of the Patron’s Trophy Grade-II cricket tournament after their closest rivals State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) slipped up on day two of the fifth and final round match here on Friday.
Separated by just two points atop Pool ‘A’ after four rounds, Navy consolidated their status as the leaders by obtaining a crucial first-innings by collecting 183 all out in response to Omar Associates’ 170 at the NBP Sports Complex.
Danish Aziz starred with tidy figures of 5-49 before his side closed the day at 149-4 in their second innings, while leading by 136 runs.
K-Electric dented SBP’s prospects by bowling out the bankers to secure a commanding 140-run lead on the first innings at the SBP Sports Complex.
SBP, however, fought back to leave K-Electric struggling at 110-7 but holding an overall lead of 250 with batting set to become more difficult on a last day pitch come Saturday.
Brighto Paints are virtually certain to grab the semi-final place from Pool ‘D’ after forcing Sabir’s Poultry to follow on at the LCCA Ground in Lahore.
Replying to 331 made by Brighto Paints, Sabir’s Poultry mustered 160 all out before slipping to 71-4 in their second innings.
A dazzling innings of 180 from Tayyab Tahir guided Ghani Glass to 377-7 after the latter resumed at 62-4 in response to Railways’ 221 at the Railways Stadium in Lahore.
Tahir, who struck 31 fours and one six during his 220-ball innings in 223 minutes, and Mohammad Waheed (79 off 133 balls, 14 boundaries) shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 185.
Railways, trailing by 156, were 56-3 in their second innings.
PIA, meanwhile, signed off their aborted Pool ‘C’ campaign with an inconsequential nine-wicket victory over Pak Saudi at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad.
