Underage girl’s marriage stopped

MIRPURKHAS: The Digri civil judge and judicial magistrate on Sunday allowed a 12-year-old girl, who was wedded to a 47-year-old man on the orders of a jirga three days ago, to go with her parents. He also remanded the nikah registrar and one of the four other nominated suspects in police custody for two days.

The Tando Jan Mohammed police had arrested nikah registrar Mir Asif Talpur and 47-year-old groom Ghulam Mustafa Kaloi in a raid on a wedding ceremony on Thursday evening when the marriage was in progress.

The two suspects along with the girl were produced in the court of the magistrate. The girl recorded her statement saying that she was being forcibly wedded to the man and that she wanted to go with her parents.

The nikah registrar, groom and four other persons from the families involved were booked under relevant sections of the anti-child marriage act at the Tando Jan Mohammed police station. The other three suspects are at large, SHO Lutuf Ali Leghari said.
