ISLAMABAD, April 30: The Chief Justice of Pakistan on Wednesday termed the arrest of Shamim Alim, wife of former Dawn staffer late Alimuddin Pathan, “shocking” and directed the NAB to submit a report before the court on May 5.

The chief justice took suo motu action on the daily Dawn report which said that Shamim Alim, widow of Alimuddin Pathan, was arrested from her home in Karachi on April 28 at 2.35am.

“I direct the National Accountability Bureau authorities to make a probe and submit a report before this court on May 5, 2003.”

The chief justice ordered that “a responsible and concerned officer, conversant with the facts of the case shall appear along with record of the case, if any.”

Ms Alim was taken into custody by NAB personnel.

ALLIANCE MOTORS: The National Accountability Bureau has filed a “final reference” of the Alliance Motors scam, involving Rs3.571 billion, in an accountability court.

According to a press release, four persons — Pir Asghar Ali Qureshi, Pir Hamil Ali Qureshi, Mohammed Ibrahim and Mohammed Tayyab — got together under the patronage of Pir Mohammed Usman and made two finance companies namely T. J. Ibrahim and Co and Alliance Motors (Pvt) Ltd.

It said that the accused cheated the public by promising a hefty monthly profit of 2 to 3 per cent on the invested amount.

The press release said that out of the available integral resources, DG NAB Sindh created a special cell comprising a brigadier, a lieutenant colonel, two case officer, seven investigation officers and required number of experts from legal, banking, income tax, land revenue and information technology departments for the investigation of this scam.

The press release further stated that all 48,250 claims have been collated and computerized.
