KARACHI, April 30: A well-equipped burns ward and a trauma centre will be built in the Walika Hospital for the labourers and their families.

“Sindh government is also considering establishing a medical teaching college beside the Walika Hospital”, provincial labour and transport minister Adil Siddiqui said at his office while talking to a group of journalists on Wednesday in connection with the May Day.

He said a medico-legal department in the hospital would also be set up to entertain the accident and police cases. He said the facilities in other hospitals working under the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI), were also being upgraded.

He said the health care facilities for the labourers, along with provision of better working environment, was responsibility of the government.

He said the government, with the cooperation of employers and labourers’ associations, had been trying to improve the productivity and performance of industrial units.

He urged the departments directly linked with the labourers welfare to improve their performance and to facilitate the provision of health care to labourers.

He asked the departments concerned to make labourers related schemes effective, which was necessary for industrial peace and to accelerate the pace of industrial development.

He said: “the May Day reminds us those labourers who sacrificed their lives in 1886 for their rights and dignity. It also reminds us that we should revive our pledge to give labourers their rights they deserve as a considerable number of labourers are still deprived of basic amenities including health and education facilities.”
