NEW DELHI, Oct 10 India, England and Singapore shared the gold medal honours in a day of thrilling shoot-offs at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.
Aaron Reading of England won the gold in the men's Trap, beating a world class field boasting of double Olympic champion Michael Diamond of Australia.
India's Harpreet Singh came from behind to beat compatriot and medal favourite Vijay Kumar in the men's 25m Centre fire Pistol event.
Singapore bagged the third gold on offer on the seventh day of the competition with Jasmine Ser Xiang Wei winning her second gold of the Games in the women's 10m Air-rifle individual event.
India continues to top the medal tally in shooting wth 13 gold, eight silver and three bronze. England were second with four gold, silver and bronze apiece. Singapore was third with three golds, four silver and five bronze.
The men's Trap finals was clearly the event of the day with a jam-packed spectator gallery watching double Olympic gold medalist Diamond take the field alongside compatriot and Athens Olympic silver medalist Adam Vella and 2004 Zagreb World Championship winner Manavjit Singh Sandhu of India.
Overcoming strong, windy conditions, Reading, who was also joint leader in the qualification rounds, won the gold with a total of 147 shots with a near perfect 24 out of 25 hits in the final of the Trap event.
All eyes though were on Diamond, who ended one shot behind after missing two shots in the final thus winning the silver.
The bronze was settled through a one-shot round of a shoot-out between the World Cup finals bronze medalist in Turkey two weeks ago — Vella and Melbourne Games bronze medallist Sandhu.
Both were tied at 144 in the final round, missing three shots each. The single-shot shoot-off saw Vella missing the second shot.
Diamond had earlier won the gold with Vella in the pair's event while Sandhu had won the silver in the same in the company of Mansher Singh.
A brilliant rapid fire round pitch-forked navyman Harpreet into first position with a total of 580 points in the 25m Centrefire Pistol event.
Kumar signed off with three golds and a silver, but not before suffering some jitters when a four-way shoot-out was announced for the silver and bronze between India, Australia, England and Singapore.
A specialist in the rapid fire event, Kumar shot a 49 in the shoot off.
England's Nick Gault withdrew after firing three shots and scoring a 17.
Meanehile drama ensued when Aussie Michaelangelo Giustiniano's electronic target showed no score. It turned out that Giustiniano had cross-fired on Singapore's Lip Meng Poh's target.
Poh, whose score showed 48 in the shootout setting him up for the silver, disputed the result but the jury rejected his appeal after checking the targets and he had to settle for the bronze.
Xiang Wei of Singapore shot a Games record breaking 501.7 in the finals of the 10m Air-rifle event to take the gold.
She broke both the qualifying as well as finals records on the way, overtaking India's Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat's mark of 500.8.
Malaysia's Nur Ayuni Halim won the silver with a 497.5 and her compatriot Nur Suryani Mohammed Taibi won the bronze with a total of 495.9. The duo had won the gold in the pairs' event on Saturday.—AFP
